How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before GiveDirectly came, I was suffering so much in terms of the basic needs. I fully relied on charcoal selling for a living. But since the day I received the transfers from GiveDirectly my life has changed. I constructed a decent house; I also own livestock not unlike before when I was just seeing them in other households. As at now, my grandchildren and I have the basic needs required and this is because of GiveDirectly. I am grateful for the assistance the organization.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly assisted me to get a house since I was sleeping in an unsecured house that was collapsing. The organization has done well to society. It is a wonderful organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow living with my grandchildren. By the time I received the second transfer, I was bereaving my mother-in-law who had passed on. I used some of the money in her sending off preparations. After the burial I opted to buy a bed and a mattress, I came up with this decision because my bed had broken and I was sleeping on the floor on a mat. I also bought 3 goats and kept the rest for my upkeep.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was at the grazing land when my mobile phone started ringing continuously. I was a bit nervous and decided to read the notification of the message. Upon checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I had finally received the long-awaited gift from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy for I knew I will finally sleep under a good shelter.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now happier and very hopeful. I am now sleeping under a very decent shelter that is spacious enough with long-lasting roofing. Being in a polygamous marriage life has never been easy. We have been sleeping under one small house together with my other two cowives and our children had to seek shelter from their friends. This was always frustrating because we have never experience the joy of living with our children under one roof. This is because since our spouse passed on some years back, each one of us has been struggling to make sure the children get their daily bread. Which sometimes was not achievable and therefore constructing my own hose was still a dream to me. However, after receiving the cash transfer, I had to prioritize building a new house which for now my life has been so good. My children no longer have to seek shelter from friends I stead, we are sheltering one roof.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger fraction of my first transfer on buying building materials which include iron sheets, building poles, timber, threads, and nails. I purchased all these with an intention of constructing a new house because the previous one was very small and could not accommodate some of my family members. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy sufficient food and other household items that I was lacking at the moment.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer means good shelter to my family. I am a widow who come from a polygamous family. Since my husband died we have been sharing the same structure and it leaks during rainy seasons. This has been a challenge because I have to look for shelter in my neighbors compound. I am planning to spend 90,000 Kenya shillings to construct a decent house so that my family can enjoy sleeping comfortably. Other than that, I am planning to spend the remaining part of the transfer to purchase beddings because we have been using the local ones made of stitches.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is my happiest part of the day. This is because I have enough time to rest. Unlike during the day when I am busy doing house chores and taking care of my grandchildren
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest hardship. I depend on my son who works as a casual laborer. The job earns him 200 Kenya shillings and is not guaranteed. This not enough to cater to all our basic needs such as food.
