How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After completing all that we had planned with my husband with our second transfer, I now have a plan of building a bigger shop and stocking it. Currently, I have a small kiosk just near my house but I believe with expansion, I can be able to get more customers and more profit. We are currently engaging in activities that will earn us better income towards the construction of the shop.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by enrolling most households in my village. Many households are so grateful for the support since it has boosted our poor standards of living.I have no complaints since everything was delivered as promised.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a long period, we had been living in a small house with my six family members hence we did have privacy as parents. When we received our second transfer, with KES 43,000 we began constructing a five-roomed house since our family is growing and we needed more space. We also used KES 3,000 in buying some maternity requirements since I was expecting my fifth-born child. With the remaining part of my transfer, we spent in purchasing foodstuffs for our family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 8.23pm while cooking supper when I heard an SMS notification on my phone. On checking, I confirmed to have received KES55000 from GiveDirectly. No sooner had I received the money than my husband arrived from work. We were very excited and ate supper joyfully that night.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is availability of building materials for building a better house. I had desired for the past four years to have a better house but my husband went to college instead. The transfers have also enhanced unity in family because we plan and execute our plans harmoniously.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES50000 on purchase of house construction materials in preparation for building a modern house because we are still living in two tiny semipermanent houses. The rest I spent on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Over the past few years, my husband has been studying at Migori teacher's college. It has taken a lot of resources. I used to operate a small shop but I was forced to close it because the recurrent cash I was using for business was used to pay school fees. Now that my husband has finished schooling my plan is to reopen the shop and go back to business. I am so happy to receive these transfers since I am now certain of going back to my business. I intend to spend KES 30000 to restock the shop and use the rest of the money to build a better house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It was a great joy when my husband finished his studies as a primary school teacher. When the results were out he had passed very well. It was the highest moment for us for we had struggled so much to pay school fees. His passing relieved the stresses that we had undergone.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The greatest challenge we are facing now is inadequate finances. We have a girl who is form one and it is a real struggle paying for her school fees. I should also be studying as an ECD teacher but this has not been possible because of lack of funds. It is a lot of challenge meeting our needs as a family.
