How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I have a pending goal that I aim to accomplish. After completing my house, there are some areas in which I postponed due to a shortage of finance. Once I get some money, I will buy three doors for the three rooms, plaster the inside part of my house, and also do flooring.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is a company that sustains life. It saved me at just the right moment when I most needed it. I was able to utilize the money to build a large house and buy food for my family. Because I don't have any established sources of income, it used to be difficult for me to put food on the table. I cannot fault the organization's actions; I am only reiterating what it did.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The construction of my house, which I had begun with the first transfer, needed to be finished as soon as I received the second one. As a result, I spent less money on various building supplies which were less, such as 16 pieces of iron sheeting for $144, some roofing timbers for $90, and nails for $50, and I gave the contractor $100. I'm glad that my family can now live comfortably in a wonderful, roomy three-room mud-walled house now that it is finished. Then, for $145, I purchased two mattresses. Considering that my granddaughters and I once slept on a sisal rope bed with ripped matting. Currently, we are appreciative of the comfortable beds we have. I also spent $70 on a burglary door as a precaution. I bought some food for my family with the balance. Although life was difficult before, I am now appreciative of the cash transfer. In contrast to before, when we frequently ate only in the evenings owing to a lack of food and occasionally went for at least two days a week without meals, it has helped us and enabled us to receive some meals daily.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to the shopping center to pick up my phone where it was charging when I heard people talking about the first transfer. Since my phone had been off the whole day, I was worried about missing out on the transfer. Upon picking it up, I switched it on while in low esteem. In less than a minute a message popped in. I rushed to my helper to check if I had also received the transfer. Upon checking, he confirmed that I had also received the transfer from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy and thanksgiving for being successful in the GiveDirectly enrolment knowing that my plans were going to work out.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The charcoal burning business which I depended on was not reliable. It could not enable me to repair my house in advance until it collapsed. Peace of mind was at a distance from me, I was disturbed and uncomfortable living in my son's house. I felt like I was not doing just to him since I had taken his private space. Thanks to GiveDirectly; the transfer changed the tune of the song and it enabled me to start construction of a new and spacious house. Even though the house is still under construction but there is a light that I will have my own very soon courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A month before the enrolment, my house collapsed. This forced me to move to my lastborn son's house. This state did not give me peace of mind since I was not as free as I used to be in my house. I felt my privacy is being tampered with and I was not in a position to build a new one since I relied on charcoal burning. When I withdrew the money, the priority was the house. I bought 14 pieces of iron sheets for $133, building poles, rafters, timbers, and nails. Apart from the iron sheets, I cannot tell how much the other materials cost since my son was in charge of buying them and supervising the construction. Currently, the house is still under construction and I decided not to use the money in any other thing until the house is complete. Although I am still staying in my son's house, I am very happy that my house will be complete soon and I will move in.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My house! I have always imagined how I can get a decent structure in case my current house collapses, not knowing that GiveDirectly was coming to our village. To me, these transfers are a double blessing because I intend to repair my house as well as invest in livestock. Half of my money ($500) will help me to reinforce my house using stones and cement from outside and also to smooth-finish the floor. This will not only make it stable but also a decent look, something that can boast my esteem as the owner. On the other hand, I will spend $240 to buy 6 goats to have a long-term project that can sustain my needs in the future. The remaining amount will cater to my very basic needs like food and clothes. What a life to enjoy!
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the food insecurity due to inadequate finances, I am equally grateful to know that my son values me as his mother. Yes, a day may pass without food but whenever he gets a little to share with his family, I am entitled to a portion of their meal. This is something that has kept a smile on my face since I am boasting to have a very responsible son. Hence, I consider this as what has given my life meaning.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
What a sorrowful life to lack money that can easily settle down my very basic needs! Imagine depending on my son who is a casual labourer yet he already has a family of 5 to support. This means when he fails to send me some cash, I will be forced to stay hungry since my charcoal work is no longer reliable due to the scarcity of trees. Sometimes, I am compelled to forfeit meals or survive on one in a day, a situation that has negatively affected my health. Therefore, I consider financial constraints as my biggest challenge.
