How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals now. My main concern is to complete the construction of the house that I have started building. I live in a small house with my family and currently, we are constructing a spacious permanent house now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The majority of the people in our community were able to build decent and spacious houses. Most used to live in grass-thatched houses but now there living standard has changed. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The construction of the new spacious and permanent house was ongoing when I received the transfers from GiveDirectly. It really boosted my work since I was able to pay workers and make their food available on time. I spent $400 on food and payments for workers. I am so grateful because this could have been so costly for me a lot. I live in a small house that could not host all my family comfortably. My spouse and I had always wanted to build a better and more spacious house but there was no money at that time. At some point, we decided to start the construction but it stopped due to a lack of money. There are so many other expenses and basic household items that we had to sort out first. I rely on small-scale farming and my spouse is employed by the government and he is the one who contributes a lot towards the construction of the house. I am so grateful because when the house is completed we will move in with our family and live comfortably. I the remaining amount of money I spent on clothes, food and other household basic needs. GiveDirectly has improved our standard of living.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited when I first received the transfer, as it brought hope of accomplishing a lot that my household had planned. I was in a shopping center - a kilometer away from home - when I received the message and had to call my husband to inform him of the good news. We were going to use the mobile money transfer to settle some bills, so I couldn't withdraw immediately. I had to wrap up the errands that I had and got back home to celebrate with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the ease of payment of the school fees, especially the vast sum that we cleared for my daughter, who was joining grade nine. This would not have been easier without the support from GiveDirectly, which has given us relief after paying with ease.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My daughter had just been admitted to a boarding secondary school for her grade nine after her impressive results in her final primary school examinations. This was a glorious moment not only for her but also for the family since we had been working hard to ensure that she attain good grades that would usher her to an excellent school. On the contrary, it was a challenge since we needed to raise enough money to facilitate her tuition and all the enlisted requirements on her admission letter - thanks to the timely receipt of the first transfer from GiveDirectly. We transferred the first KES 27000 from the total amount directly to the school account for her tuition fees, and I am glad that she reported on her appointed date. I spent KES 15000 on the purchase of some materials for the construction that had just started, bought 6 iron sheets at KES 5000 meant to expand the chicken coop that was gradually growing smaller as the chicken population kept growing, and also spent the remaining on obtaining new pairs of clothes for my five children. We are all happy that the plans we had were all accomplished and hopeful that the second transfer will bring more transformation to the household.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Being a stay at home mother, I have always wished to be independent and assist my husband in raising my family of 7. The poultry farming I began in 2015 has made me execute my parental duties successfully through the sale of eggs and chicken. However, the output has reduced significantly due to the fowlpox disease that killed 20 hens. When I receive these transfers, I intend to use KES 30000 to purchase 20 chickens as well as erect a poultry house. Upon successful completion of this project, I will be glad that I will be able to earn income and hence support my husband in bringing up the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Whoever said farming does not pay lied!. I am a staunch farmer as I depend on rearing chicken, dairy cattle and growing bananas to support my family of 7. I was glad in February 2022 when I earned on average KES 5000 weekly from the sales of my farm produces. This assisted me in purchasing food for the household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In May 2020 when schools were closed due to Corona, my 13-year-old son developed a seizure that has failed to disappear since then. We have however put him on medication with the hope that he will be fine sometime. I am always worried about his condition when he is in school because I do not know when the seizure will strike him again and whether he will receive the required care.
