How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer, in that I no longer buy milk daily like before because the transfer enabled me to purchase 3 dairy cows, of which I am hopeful that I will get enough milk to feed my family, In addition, very soon I will be able to earn an income from the dairy products. I am grateful for the support that changed our lives positively.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Most women and the old people were empowered, and everyone is happy and grateful, I don't see anything that the organisation is not doing it well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on farming for my livelihood, unfortunately, I no longer have the energy to cultivate a bigger piece of land due to my old age, My wife and I depend on milk daily, We use 1litre of milk daily which is KES 45, and this is very expensive for us, therefore when I received my transfer 1 bought 3 cows worth KES 52,000, We are happy that we own dairy cows now and we no longer need to buy milk.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Upon receiving the money, our happiness was way too high having in mind that all the fantasies we had on investments were soon going to happen. We had all plans laid down, and confirmation of the receipt was our first step in realizing the first goal. We came into an agreement to clear the minor debts we had and second on the list was to ensure that we obtain at least a good breed of a cow since we had been buying milk all along.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having a herd grazing on our field is one good feeling which like in any other household has really raised our status. Our fields have been deserted for quite a long time since the whole herd we used to keep was sold when we needed school fees for our children. This investment has spared us a lot of expenses since we are currently producing enough milk both for our household and a surplus to sell to the neighborhood. We are really grateful for this turnaround and are expectant that the second transfer will even bring other greater changes to our household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the first transfer was a great deal of a blessing to our household. We decided to spend part of it on obtaining a heifer and one lactating cow. This was a chance for us to redeem ourselves and get back to the livestock keeping after selling the previous herd to pay school fees for my sons. With the remaining portion, we had other great plans to invest in but my sister-in-law was hospitalized then. Being one of the family members whom most of my younger brothers look up to, I had to stand in and ensure that the admission cost to the hospital was cleared. We are all glad that she is now well even though she is still under medication.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means assured food security in my family. I intend to use $700 of my transfer to buy two Friesian dairy cattle which will be my source of income from selling milk, and this also means that I will be saving $0.6 daily which I usually spend buying milk for my family consumption. I will then spend the remaining $300 to buy 10 sheep as a store of wealth to be sold whenever I have any emerging needs more so medication during this old age.
What is the happiest part of your day?
At this age where I am no longer active enough to engage in energy-requiring activities such as farming, waking up and sitting down all day under the shade is my daily boring routine. I am always happy in the evening when my grandchildren come over to check on me after they arrive from school. Seeing them playing around my compound drives a sense of gratification in my heart.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I used to be a great renowned large-scale dairy farmer in this area till two years ago when Anthrax attacked my 13 dairy cattle and they all died in the process. Since then, buying milk for my family consumption has been my daily norm and I also feel worthless since, in our culture, livestock is a symbol of wealth yet I own none. This is the biggest hardship I face.
