How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When we received our first and second transfer, we were able to spend the money on various projects including buying a motorcycle to support my husband in his livestok selling business and I also remained with some money that helped me start a grocery business at a nearby center next to my home. These two businesses are right now doing well and with the increased profits, I have a plan of starting a posho mill business. Right now in our village there is only one posho mill that serves the entire village and with the rising population, I have seen an opportunity to tap into. I am optimistic that this will come into reality soon considering that I currently do not incur a lot of expenses at home having had my last born clear her college recently.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did well in giving us money with no strings attached that empowered each person differently. The fact that we were all given an opportunity to choose how we would want to benefit from the money was just something to commend them for. I did not find on the other hand anything that I thought GiveDirectly did not do well. Everything they did was just done right and we are extremely grateful for that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 25000 to buy a young heifer that has added to the two dairy cows that we own as a family. Livestock does well within my location and they are easily disposed living assets that can help one to meet the cost of any emergin needs foreseen and unforeseen. They also multiply very quickly and increase in value over time. The remaining amount of almost KES 25000 was used to buy enough food for family, clothes and improve my small business of grceries. We are currently living a more happy and stress free life different from the time before we received the transfers and my husband and I are so grateful for the support given to us.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10am when I heard a message notification from my phone. I didn't check it, I thought it was a common messages that I always received. When my son came in the morning, I gave him my phone to check it. When he opened the message I saw the smile in her face and I couldn't wait to know what the message was from. He said that it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and excited. It was the best news that I have ever heard. I knew I would be able to plan with my family on how to spend it. We went to withdraw the money the same day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a motorcycle. This was always my wish but I didn't had the money to buy it. I bought a second hand motorcycle at the cost of KES 30,000 from a friend. I run a grocery store at the shopping center. Transporting my stock to the market was so costly. I could spent almost half of the profits. My spouse too does a some business and we agreed to simplify and cutting the cost of transport. Currently we own a motorcycle, this has ease our work. I save time and I'm able to meet the demand of my customers on time. I am able to save some money that I could have used for transport and invest on other activities at home. My stock reach at the market fresh and clean. My spouse is so happy too because he is in a position to run his errands without any struggles like before. We hope to build a better life because we have simplified our transport means and able to generate some income daily.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to purchase a second hand motorcycle. I am a business lady, I run a grocery store. Transporting my stock was so costly. We decide to cut this cost by buying a motorcycle. I added some money to my stock and this was one of the best thing that I had always wanted to do. The rest of the money I bought two sacks of maize and one sack of rice. My family members really celebrated and love the plans.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have one cow whom I depend on for milk production. This cow yield four liters a day. I sell three liters of it at KES 33. I am getting old and no longer has the energy to go to the farm to dig. So when I get this money I will buy another dairy cow to increase milk production and increase income. I estimate it to cost around KES 45000 . Our area is prone to drought and food crops do not yield much but with some income, I will be able to buy food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Three months ago my daughter sent me some money to purchase food. This brought joy and happiness into my life since it could not have come at a better time than that. We were almost at the point of starvation.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is food insecurity. Our area is easily affected by drought. I had planted maize and beans but if we do not get rain soon they are going to wither. This has forced us to depend on food vendors however I do not have a stable source of income.
