How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is the ability to invest in farming. I have a parcel of land that had for a long time been lying idle. I always wanted to utilize it on maize and beans farming but it was difficult to start. Using part of the transfer, I plowed the land and planted maize. As if in agreement with GD's work, the heavens opened and we have received an unusual January rain. This is has led to the proper growth of my maize crop. For over ten years, I had not gotten any substantial maize harvest. This is the first year in a very long time that I have had enough food for ny family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly brought about the biggest change ever in my society. Many people from my village own livestock. Their living standards have improved to the extent that our children are rarely sent back home for school fees. The current ongoing economic development is easily attributed to GD activities. They did so well by giving us the aid as cash and not as goods so that we spend on our specific needs. This was the best way to help our community.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer on constructing a kitchen. I used to cook in an open area since I didn't have the means of constructing one. This made it difficult for me to cook during rainy seasons. I also bought a few clothes for myself and my family members. I further went ahead and bought the beddings. Apart from that, I also bought a water tank to collect rainwater after installing iron sheets on the roof of my house. Last but not least, I paid school fees for my son who was joining secondary school. He had a good start and is going on well with school. I am glad and feel very proud of the home improvements too.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money mean I will be able to own a cow and start a new business. I have been desiring to start a new business and since I had no capital, I was unable to run it. I thank God for this lifetime opportunity.

The happiest part of my day is in the morning since waking up healthy and seeing a new day makes me feel jovial and rejuvinated.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We have been unable to harvest maize for some years now due to infestation of unknown desease making us work extremely hard in order to fend for our family. The desease drastically reduced on the yield and that has been the biggest hardship we have faced in life.
