How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to complete the construction of our new house. The second transfer helped me a great deal by allowing me to put up the building but I now remain with the floor and doors to fix. It is on top of my plans to be able to do this and keep my children in school at the same time. This may take longer to accomplish since I depend on small business of grocery selling and farming to make income. All these are dependent on me since I am a widow but I am optimistic that I will be able to accomplish all.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well in giving all of us money unconditionally. This gave all of us an opportunity to invest the money in ways we thought would benefit us the most.I saw peple choose different spending parts and everyone was happy about the decisions they made be it to buy livestock or build a new house or buy furniture or even start a business. This was so good of GiveDirectly and I would encourage them to continue doing their work this way.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used all of my second transfer to build a new house. Having received the second transfer and used it to pay school feesfer my two children, I felt there was need to use the second transfer to build a new house as there was no likelihood of my children being sent home for school fees or any other expenses arising for that matter. The mud walled house that I was living in was not only small but was also quite hard for me to maintain tho house with my age advancing and my children being away from home most of the time. I feel so happy that I now have a timber walled house and looking forward to having it completed for us to move in.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy and thankful when I first realized that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. At that moment, I was alone in the house and had to call my helper who came and confirmed what I had seen in the message. My children were also very excited when I informed them of the great news and had to let the money stay in my account till the next day when I withdrew since I had to align all the plans before emptying my account.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the complete renovation and furnishing of my old house that currently looks great. It has been hard living in it during rainy seasons but at the moment it is warm and dry on the floors with its sitting room much appealing after bringing and a piece of new furniture. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for this support that has brought a lot of changes in our household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living in an old structure had been so frustrating especially during the rainy seasons as the roof was already rusted and could let the rainwater drip flooding the floors and at times could mess with the bedding. On receiving the first transfer, everyone in the household agreed that the renovation of the roof had to be a top priority. I purchased 22 irons sheets at KES12000 that has facilitated the replacement of the rusted roof of my house. I also added a heifer at KES 20000 to one lactating cow I had been having together with an additional heifer that belongs to my neighbor but had been grazing with mine over some time. I am looking forward to some extra liters of milk produced in the future that, in turn, will enhance school fees payment for my children. Having renovated the roof of my house, I also saw a need to replace the old seats and brought in new ones at KES 8000, settled the KES10000 school fees for my daughter currently in college, and obtained a barbed wire with the remaining amount that has been useful in fencing around the grazing field for my livestock.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I own small grocery business. I'm always away from home during the day. I have two cows I borrowed from a relative. Sometimes they are not well fed or they stray away when I'm away. I plan to purchase a barbed wire so that I can fence my farm all around and partition the field into small units. This will go a long way in restraining the cows and I can comfortably focus on other activities. Since I do not own a cow of my own, I plan to purchase two I add to the one I have. All this will cost me approximately KES 80,000. For the rest of the amount, I will pay school fees for my daughter in college.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The afternoon is the happiest part of my day. At this time I'm mostly done with the housework and farm activities. After taking lunch, I take a two-hour nap of rest before go open my grocery store until late in the evening. Getting rest in the afternoon is so refreshing as it gives me time to re-energize for my business activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I lost my husband 12 yrs ago. He left behind four children whom I have been raising on my own. One of my children dropped out of school because of a lack of school fees. Meeting my family's needs has been the biggest challenge. We live hand to mouth. I have sold the properties I had to see children through school. Bouncing back from this is hard as I have only one source of income.
