How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The financial help from GiveDirectly has transformed my life positively and I will forever be grateful for that. Initially, I used to shelter in an unfavorable environment. My house was very small and during the rains, it could leak excessively. This was the worse experience in my life becasue when it rained at night we couldn't afford to sleep till dawn. I had nowhere to seek shelter from since non of my village mate had a spacious house to accommodate my family and I. Also, the livestock that I own is now the living assets that I am depending on for all the emergencies that I may encounter.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion. GiveDirectly does well by offering us good teachings in regards to the cash transfer. This enlightened most of us since it was our first time holding such a huge amount of money. This also reduced bribery and theft cases becasue everyone was so vigilant. Also, I do not see any part that GiveDirectly need to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the part of my second transfer on buying a dairy cow at KES 16000 and two goats at KES 5000. I have always been yearning to own them but because of the meagre income, I couldn't afford it. Also, I bought building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, timber and nails. This was majorly for the construction of a new hose because the initial one used to leak excessively. With the remaining amount of money, I cleared fees for my daughter and bought enough food for the family and I am glad we no longer skip meals like before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember just like yesterday when I was still in my bed when I heard my phone ringing. I was nervous and decided to check who might have sent such a message at such an hour. Only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, I felt so happy and knew that I would finally construct my own house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a decent house has made my life to be totally different in such a way that I never expected it would happen this soon. Previously I used to sleep at my relative's houses together with my children's since my house collapsed so many years ago. Life has been so tough and because I did not have enough money to buy the required materials for the construction of a new house, I had to seek shelter be in the summer or winter season. The coming of GD into my life has changed my story. I am now a proud owner of a decent iron-roofed house. We are now living happily as a family and we no longer worry about the rains or even the insecurity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a piece of land as a potential asset. I also bought goats that I am currently rearing in my compound. I also bought some building materials such as bricks, sand, cement, and iron sheets. This was for the construction of a new house since I have been sleeping at my relative's house for so many years. I also bought some beddings which include a bed and a mattress to replace the old mats that I have been using. I also bought some foodstuffs for my family and some other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money I will build another house and leave the current one for my children. They are now grown ups and therefore need their privacy. The house will cost me 300 USD. I will also buy household items the priority being beds and bedding. We do not have beds. One will be mine and the other for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is because I am usually strong to tackle the day's activities. My day's activities require a lot of energy. I spend most of the time on in my farm.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My spouse is away from home working. He rarely comes home and rarely supports me financially. I have three children. This has really made me struggle financially. I depend on farming which earns me very little since productivity in this region is very low. This is mainly due to prolonged drought.
