How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My ambition is for my children to excel in their studies. This is the only way they can have a bright future. I intend to save money from the dairy project I started as well as from selling farm produce. I am eternally grateful for the financial assistance that enabled us to achieve financial independence.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's programs were fair and transparent; from the moment they entered our community, we were all treated well, and they made certain that they visited every household and ascertained the true situation on the ground. GiveDirectly's assistance raised our standard of living by transforming our lives. They helped and empowered our community while not discriminating against anyone. I didn't point out any flaws or things that weren't done with the utmost integrity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My most pressing need was to pay my children's school fees. This was due to the fact that I am a widow with six children. I rely on farming for a living, though it is insufficient to meet all of our needs. As a result, when I received my second transfer, I chose to pay $100 in school fees for my children, and then I purchased a dairy cow worth $280 to reduce the cost of purchasing milk. I had cows before, but I was forced to sell them to offset the school fees for my children. Finally, I spent the remaining funds on household items. Because of financial constraints, this was previously impossible. I will be eternally grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 Pm when I was preparing my supper. When I heard a message notification from my phone. I did not know it was GiveDirectly. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately informed my children. We all celebrated the good news. It was the highest amount of money I have ever received. I knew I would be able to pay the debt that I had. I withdraw the money after one week. I wanted to take enough time to plan with my family. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have paid the debt that was giving me restless nights. My son got married a few months ago and I had promised my in-laws that I will pay some amount as we wait to give more as required by the culture. I was worried since I had promised to fulfill that but I did not have the money. I do not have a continuous source of income. We depend on small-scale farming of maize and vegetables. Mainly this is for consumption. We rarely sell to earn an income. I also have a small dairy-keeping project where we get some income through milk sales. All this was not enough to pay the dowry. It is so respectful to meet the dateline with the in-laws. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be in pay the dowry. Currently, I have peace of mind because everything is in order. I do my daily activities without any stress like before. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly this could not have happened on time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 10,000 on paying the dowry. My son got married and I had promised my in-laws to pay some amount as we prepare to give more. I did not have money at the time. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and this was the opportunity to pay the debt. I spent KES 26,000 on purchasing a heifer. This is because I always purchase milk daily and this is so costly for me. We will get enough milk when it reproduces in the next few months. My children will get enough milk and I will sell the surplus to earn an income. Besides that, I purchased a television set. This is because we wanted to get updated on what is happening across and also get some entertainment. The remaining amount of money I spent on household items and food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This money will help me expand my paultry keeping project which has been the source of my income. I'm a widow and all the expenses at the household depends on me. I do a small poultry keeping project that earns me around KES 7,000 in every four months. If I improve the project I'll be able to earn triple of that. I also have a girl in highschool whom I pay around KES 30,000 every year. I'm happy that this money will help me settle the balance and pay for another term for her.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My hope for better life and success in future is always what keeps me happy. I see people struggle but when I see the hope and resilience in me I feel so strong and happy. Even for today I'm happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My children are struggling in life without better employment opportunities and Im always worried of their future. I wish that they succeed in life so that I will not be struggling much to provide for the younger ones.
