How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal was to purchase a dairy cow. This is because I used to buy milk and this was so costly for me. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but this was not possible because I did not have the money. I am so grateful because I have cut the daily cost of buying milk. I have devoted much of my time to this amazing project of dairy keeping. I hope to make it my main source of income through the sales of milk.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by enrolling the poor in the community to get the transfer to improve their standard of living. Most of the people have built better houses since they lived in old houses some were leaking from the inside. Besides that, some were able to pay school fees for their children and even buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This is because the cost of buying milk daily was so costly. I had no constant source of income and this was so demoralizing since my family would go without milk sometime. Currently, I have cut the daily cost and my family gets enough milk. I spent KES 12,000 on paying school fees for my children in various schools. They are so happy because they are now studying well without being sent home like before. Their performance has improved since they do not miss any lessons. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 8 am and I was at home preparing myself to wash the dirty utensils when suddenly I heard my phone ringing hence notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check it and I was so surprised and happy when I read the SMS which was saying that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. My joy showed itself on my face that my children noticed it. They asked me what was going on and I told them about it. They were so happy too and we thanked God for everything
I then called my husband who was away at work and I also told him the wonderful news. He was so happy too as we talked about the plans that we had made.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer from GiveDirectly brought a very big difference in our daily lives. Our daily budget cost has been reduced since we no longer buy milk. We also have maize for our consumption and hence we are no longer incurring the cost of buying some. With the reduced costs, I am now able to pay for the group's merry-go-round contributions comfortably and without failure. This will in turn lead to us getting more money when it gets to our turn to receive it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of our recent transfer on buying a cow. The cow was going for KES 43000 but we pleaded with the owner to allow us to first pay KES 30000 and later on finish paying for the balance. We decided to buy the cow because we didn't have one. The one cow that we had died. We have hence been incurring the cost of buying milk where we usually buy a liter every day. This amount of milk is little and it is not enough for the children to consume. They have hence been suffering due to a lack of milk for their consumption. We had thus made plans that when we get the self-help group merry-go-round contributions in July, we were going to buy one. We are hence glad that GiveDirectly made this dream of ours come true earlier than we had expected. Other than that, we also bought four bags of maize for our consumption at KES 3700 per bag. We also took another KES 8000 and we used it to pay off a debt. We had lost our mother a few days before the transfer was sent and we were still having some debts that we had not settled. With the remaining amount, we used it to buy clothes for our five children. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their big help.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I shall be able to seek treatment for my mother-in-law. She has been sick for the last one year and we have not been able to seek specialized treatment for her because we do not have money. She is supposed to undergo a surgery to restore her health fully and it will cost approximately KES. 70,000. We would have sold land to pay for the bill but we no longer have any remaining because we sold it already to pay for our father-in-law's hospital bill before he passed on. I am glad that you have come at the time of need and your transfers will be so timely to save a life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We had the local church help us pay half of the oxygen supply in December and this gave me a lot of happiness because I felt that at least there are people who feel the situation that we are undergoing and are ready to help.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge am facing at the moment is buying medical supplies for my mother-in-law. Her health condition requires that we buy oxygen supply monthly and it needs KES. 5,000. This is equivalent to half of my husband's salary. We have had to forego 1 meal a day ever since this monthly bill came about.
