How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For a long time, my primary focus had been relocating to our own land and home compound. Now that the transfers have made my dream a reality, the next aim is to start a small vegetable-selling business to supplement the little my husband earns. If I had KES 3,000 right now, I would start this business because things have started to get tough again, with hunger being the main concern.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
My life transformation is substantial proof of Give Directly's outstanding work of giving unconditional cash transfers. There are no words to explain how grateful I am to the organization for enabling me to relocate to a personal compound and build a house. To be honest, without the transfers, I would not be where I am today. There is nothing wrong with the way Give Directly operates in my opinion.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I had always wanted to own a piece of land and live there with our family, but financial constraints deterred us from doing so. His earnings from raising livestock and burning charcoal barely covered food and school fees for our seven children. The cash transfer provided an ideal opportunity to realize our dream of relocating. I paid KES 6,000 to have a two-acre plot of land we purchased cleared so that we could build a two-bedroom house. Following that, I spent KES 10,000 on the house's tree poles and KES 10,000 on a builder to complete the construction exercise. Then I used KES 20,000 to pay off outstanding school fees for my five primary school children and two high schoolers. The amount also covered the following academic term's tuition fees in advance as a precaution in case we were unable to clear them on time. Finally, to relieve my husband's burden, I purchased food to last the family two months with the remaining funds.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at night and I was still preparing supper when my son saw the text message confirming that I have received the money from GiveDirectly and immediately informed me. I was so happy and prepared the supper that day in a very good mood when I got the money. This was because I had gotten the ability to do what is important and desired to do for a long time, especially, building a better house, getting livestock and settling my children's school fees arrears. I was so happy and grateful the moment I received the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that we will very soon be sleeping in a way better house with a better roof than the one we used to live in previously. I also have livestock that will potentially take over the duty of taking care of us after the food, we bought using part of the transfer I received from GiveDirectly, is finished.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 25000 on buying materials for building my house, that is a better and improved version of the one we previously lived in. This is because we used to live in a makeshift house that was in a very poor condition and was not any different from sleeping out in the open. The roof was casually made of and covered with canvases that could barely shield us from rain whenever it rains which meant that we would have to spend the whole night awake. This used to make so unhappy and stressed, because we all solely relied on my husband who also depended on some casual jobs that could hardly raise enough money to even meet our family's immediate needs let alone providing a good shelter for us. Therefore, I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly, because we are now about to have a better house with a better roof and we will no longer have to worry about being rained on the whole night. I also spent KES 15000 on buying five goats because I believe that they are an investment and a tribute to GiveDirectly because through them I will always remember the assistance I received. Also, I believe that they will multiply and increase in numbers, and from them I will be able to upgrade to cows which will increase my possessions. I am so happy and proud.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means good health to my family this is because currently, I live in a very miserable house that is made of polythene on the roof. Since the polythene is rugged, it becomes so challenging to my family during rainy seasons since we are rained on. This has resulted in frequent illnesses in my family because of the cold we are exposed to. I plan to construct a decent iron-roofed house that will put my family in a favorable home like other people in the village, something that will bring about peace and hence, a better life. To ensure this comes to reality, I intend to spend a better portion of my first transfer (40000 KES). The remaining amount will help me to acquire some livestock especially 10 goats for 30000 KES to act as my store of wealth, also to support my children's education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the many challenges that I face in life, something that I am grateful for is the fact that my husband has never failed to provide food for the family. He always ensures to send me 3000 KES every month that caters to our food expenses. Hence, I consider this as what has brought more joy to life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In this term alone, my 4 children have been at home for 2 weeks due to school fee arrears. This has stressed me a lot because I am always worried about how they will catch up with the others in the school. To make it worse, their performances have ever been low since they are not settled in school. Since I depend on their father who works as a shepherd and he earns utmost 6000 KES per month, it can not fully cater to our needs. Hence, I consider financial instability as the main challenge that I am currently facing.
