How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I have been able to expand my business by restocking it. I was able to achieve this using my first transfers and due to this, my profits have increased since most people prefer buying from my shop now as they know that they will get most of the items. This has resulted to an increase in my income and because of this, I no longer rely on my spouse to provide most of our needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by uplifting the lives of the lowly people in the society and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 30000 to buy a dairy cow. With this, I am assured of a source of income when it starts to reproduce. Owning this cow will also help me save the money I would otherwise use in buying milk. Also, I purchased three three-seater seats and two tables worth KES 12000. After building a spacious house for my family using my first transfer, I realized that my sitting room was more spacious and I had only one seat. This made me to purchase more seats and tables in order to avoid the shame of having a bigger room with nothing to sit on. I spent the remaining amount on food and clothing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard my phone ring at around six twenty nine in the morning while still asleep. On checking it, it was Mpesa notification message from GiveDirectly and we were very happy and excited. Immmediately we woke up and my husband went to withdraw quickly without taking breakfast. The following day is when we made orders and our shop is now fully stocked.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am more relaxed than before because I used to rely on merry go round monthly group contribution to sustain my business. With GD transfers, I am happy because the things I used to desire to stock like blankets, cups, thermos flasks and a variety of body lotions are currently in stock. Because our shop is strategically positioned within a short time from the shop profits I have been able to buy furniture for my house. Initially, because our area is semi arid we used to rely on short season crops like tomatoes, onions and maize in order to boost our shop stock.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 300USD of my transfer on buying additional stock for my shop business .This is because initially I started the 200USD stock but couldn't meet all my customers needs but through the GD tranfers have made it possible and now my business is doing quite well. I spent 220USD of my on building a 28 Iron roofed three roomed house because the one I had was a single tiny room which served as a bedroom and kitchen at the same time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Since completing grade 12 and attaining relatively low marks, I have been yearning to open a shop in a nearby place because I find it as the best option for me. I strongly believe that running a shop in our area will act as a reliable source of income for my family because there are no shops within our vicinity. Hence, receiving this money is a sign of hope and prosperity in my future life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when resting after successfully accomplishing my farming activities. This allows me to rest as I plan on the next day's tasks.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge I have faced in life is the failure to attain reasonable and satisfactory marks in secondary school. I joined a local school that lacked vital learning resources, especially books. Besides, I used to be sent home frequently to fetch fees due to financial constraints faced by my family. Accordingly, my dream of becoming a doctor has been shattered by the low marks that could not allow me to proceed with my studies yet I lack school fees for repeating some secondary school classes.
