How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I spent the first transfer to buy a piece of land. I plan to build a house before receiving my bride and starting a family. Currently, I am in talks with the family and I am hopeful to have to build a house before the day comes.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The staff was able to visit us in our homes and treat us with kindness. The way the questions were asked, was polite. They are jovial staff and I felt safe talking to them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I did not complete my primary education and ever since I have been living in my parent's house taking care of the household cattle. I have never been employed and receiving this transfer has enabled me to buy two dairy cows that I sell milk to my neighbors. I sell three liters a day where I make $1.5 and the money is spent on food and saving for my dowry. I plan to marry in 2023 and I have been saving for it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was filled with joy when I learned that I had received my first transfer. It was around 5:00 PM on my way home from looking after my father's cattle when I got a confirmation message. The moment I got home I shared the news with my spouse who was equally thrilled with the news. At last, we had hopes of owning our cows.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The pride in owning livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly. I am foreseeing a brighter future once they give birth, especially from the milk sales. I can also sell some of them in the future to meet urgent needs whenever they arise.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having witnessed how beneficial cattle are especially from my father who entirely relies on cattle rearing throughout his life, I could not wait any longer to own some. With the first transfers, I spent KES 41000 on two dairy cows and KES 11500 on three goats. I relied on casual labor and in most cases, whenever I was not lucky to get a job then I would look after my father's cows. It was then that I developed an interest in raising cattle. I am hopeful that once they will have given birth then we shall not rely on my father for milk and will even sell the surplus. This will be an additional income for my household. KES 1500 I spent on some of the foodstuff and detergents for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means thatI will improve my home by building a house because I live on a small cottage that my father build for me. I will spend about KES 30,000 on buying building materials like roofing sheets and wood. I will then invest the rest of the money on livestock, mainly goats and a dairy cow. The goats multiply quickly raising the value of my investment. I need to own a dairy cow also because of the milk that I need for daily consumption.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last six months, I have not worked on anything notable. I have been living a modest life without any achievements but given that I will getting funded by GiveDirectly, I will do a lot, among them starting to keep livestock that will serve as a proper sources of income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge that I currently face is living in a poor house because I do not have money to build a good one. I rely on selling milk that bring me in about KES 100 per day. I spend all of this on food hence I cannot raise enough to improve my home.
