Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes past 7 pm and I was at home relaxing with my wife when I heard my phone vibrating. My heart was filled with joy as I read the Mpesa message to her. She became so happy upon hearing the good news and we decided as a family to review our plan on how we would spend the transfer before cashing it out.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My children usually go to look after our neighbor's goats during their free time and they had requested me to buy for them. I had not been able to achieve this due to a lack of finances. I am happy that with the transfer, I was able to purchase a dairy cow and a goat. Due to this, I have been able to save the money that I usually spend on milk and my children are always full of joy while feeding the goat. I believe that they will soon increase in number and I will have assets that I can lean on in case of financial challenges.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving our transfer, we saw it as an opportunity to acquire what we did not have. First, we spent KES 6000 to buy a goat, and KES 30000 on a dairy cow since buying milk has been our routine. We usually spend KES 100 on it every day since we have three children who are still young and mostly want to take milk. Using the remaining amount, we bought four three-seater seats at KES 10000 since we had a few that were old, and bought some clothes and food to last us for some time. I am happy that GiveDirectly enabled us to achieve all this since it would have taken us a long time before achieving them despite doing a business of buying and selling goats in our nearest trading centers.
