I'm a window and I have been selling charcoal and firewood to provide for my six children. Although I have been giving it my best by working tirelessly, life has not been easy for me. We have slept hungry, slept outside in the cold and my children have walked around with torn clothes. For the longest time, I have been thinking of starting a business so that it can supplement my income but I couldn't raise capital by myself. When I received my first transfer, I started a local kiosk where I have been selling vegetables and fish. Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9am and I was at my usual routine of gathering logs and arranging them in a conical heap before making a fireshaft, when I had a message received tone that alerted me to have received the cash transfer.I was excited and I immediately stopped what I was doing and walked to my nearest mobile service agent to withdraw the amount.I went to my sons school and paid part of the school fees and walked home a happy mother because I was relieved that my son will not be sent home and I had food for him and his brother and sisters for the next four days.

The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving this funds is am hopeful of having a home.I have been living in a crude single room which is not spacious and comfortable for my six children .Its not ideal for a home because of the cold at night and if it rains it leaks through the rusty roof.At night we sleep in fear of being attacked by night animals because of the current house condition. What does receiving this money mean to you?
Being a widow without a formal job and taking care of six children has not been an easy task for me. Since I got no skills that can get me employment, I have been relying on hefty casual jobs to provide for my family. This has left me with a chest condition that is yet to be diagnosed because I can't afford money to go for a scan. Nowadays, I barely do any job because of chest pain and this means my children suffering because I got no one else to depend on. Receiving this money means that I will get medical intervention and provide for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy that my neighbors have been very supportive since I became sick and my children have not suffered as I had anticipated.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Scarcity of water and the inability to provide for my children is the biggest challenges that I'm facing currently. With the chest pains, I can not manage to carry a jerrican of water. My children are young and therefore can manage to walk 30 kilometers to fetch water. At this point, I'm left with no option rather than buying water where a 20litres jerrican goes for Ksh 50. This serves us for four days as we only use it for cooking and drinking. We have not been able to bath or wash cloths for the last one month.
