How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, the only goal I had in mind before the coming of GiveDirectly was to buy livestock more so goats. Since paying school fees for my children has been the main challenge, I hope that the goats would increase in number and sell some sort out the arrears. Also, I will no longer strain in fending for my children as before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly did a splendid job not only in my household but also in the entire village. The transfer was sent directly to our mobile phones, the same amount and time as we had been promised during the registration period. Also, the money was unconditional; we were all given a chance to choose what to purchase. Therefore, I do not see any sector GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying four goats worthy of KES 14000. It has always been my dream to have them but because of financial hardship, I couldn't afford them. I settled for them because they reproduce twice a year and they require minimal supervision as compared to other domestic animals. I also cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my five children who are still in primary schools. got my five children. In addition to that, I bought building materials such as iron sheet sheets at KES 12000, building poles at KES 4000, and a labor charge of KES 4500. I had intended to construct a new house for my three sons who had been sheltering at their grandparent's house. I later bought a new solar panel at KES 6500 which has now been of help especially at night and charging my phone. Initially, I was using relatively expensive candles.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was overcome with joy and I was so grateful when I received the money because my charcoal burning business was adversely affected by the ongoing drought in our area and trees are no longer able to be replaced so when we cut a couple there is no hope of getting other trees to burn and produce charcoal. Therefore, getting this money made me feel so good because it was an amount that I had never received at a go.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am completely happy right now unlike before because I used to depend on my charcoal-burning business could hardly enable address all the pressing challenges that I used to face especially education for my children, their own house, and getting the goats. That is the biggest difference in my life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought five goats for a total cost of KES15000 because goats are an investment that I can depend on to educate my children when they get to college. I also spent a total of KES10250 in school fees and uniforms for my five children because it has always been my desire to educate my children. Then, I bought iron sheets for a cost of KES7200 to build a house for my children because they are grown-ups and it is a sign of disrespect in our culture for us to share the same house with them. Therefore, that is something that makes me so happy.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to invest in livestock because this is the only way I can save my money to earn a profit when I sell them after they multiply. I, therefore, intend to start with 10 goats that will cost me KES 30000 of my first transfer. The remaining amount of my first transfer will cater to food expenses and household needs. With my second transfer, I plan to spend KES 35000 to construct a separate house for my children, and this will restore the respect I have lost for a long time. The balance will help me to pay school fees for my children in school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening because it is at this time when I am free and I can rest a lot. Unlike in the morning and afternoon when I am busy with my charcoal work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This is because I am doing casual jobs of charcoal vending that earn me a little of KES 500 per week. Due to this, I have been struggling to provide for my family and sometimes I fail to put food on the table. This has ashamed me for a long time.
