How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm looking forward see the two goats that I bought multiply to a big herd and this means that, I will be able to sell them in future when my children joins high school and pay their school fees. This will also lessen the burden for my husband who is the sole provider of the family. Taking our kids to school means that we will be helping them build a better future for themselves and their families.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is helping the less fortunate in the society rise their standards of living as if it were not for the transfers, I wouldn't have managed to build a better house for my family. I am so happy for the financial support and I appreciate.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Previously, I was living in a single room which could not accommodate both of us( parents) and our children something which made us to make the kitchen a bedroom for our children. It was a very risky environment for them because fire would easily break out burning the house thus also burning them and therefore, I would pour water on the fireplace where we used to prepare our meals everyday before going to bed. We could not afford to build a bigger house to accommodate all of us due to financial incapability as I am a peasant farmer and my husband who is the bread winner earns an average of $3 per day from operating a motorbike taxi. Being enrolled in the program was a great opportunity for us to build a big and better house. The first transfer of $550 enabled us to build a two bedroom structure and we were able to put up a roof with $350 of my second transfer. I spend $10 of the balance to buy two goats and the remaining to buy food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited when I received a message from GiveDirectly bearing the good news about the first transfer. At first, I doubted it but on checking my account balance I got the assurance. I was at home with my family that morning and had to share the excitement with them. They were all thankful and full of hopes that all we had been planning was soon beginning. I could not withdraw the money immediately since the plans we had set to start a week after the receipt of the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is the sufficient supply of milk from the dairy cow I bought a month ago. It is always a good feeling getting to the cowshed and coming back with a jug full of milk every morning and later in the evening. I am grateful that my child can now get a glass of milk every evening.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a family of three that has been fully relying on my parents' support of foodstuff that includes vegetables, maize, and mostly milk since we have never gotten a cow that would provide enough milk for the family. On receiving the first transfer, our plan to buy a dairy cow topped our list. Visiting the nearby market the following week where I secured a dairy cow at KES 38000 was inevitable. I am happy that since then; the cow had been providing us with enough milk for our household use and we are no longer dependent on my parents. I also paid the debt I had accumulated on the installments that I had to make every week after obtaining a motorbike on loan. I paid KES 7000, which allowed me to continue operating normally without frequent calls from the company. In addition, I used the remaining amount to buy enough foodstuff and some pairs of clothes for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently I have a motorbike given in form of a loan running for a period of two and a half years. The sum amount payable is KES 206000 which is much expensive compared to a one time buy which costs KES 125000. I usually pay KES 380 per day which limits my household's take home amount. I could like to repay a lump sum of KES 20000 to reduce the loan repayment time frame. For the past seven months I fetch milk from my maiden's household. I feel like owning my own dairy cow will boost my self-esteem and sense of ownership. This will also minimize domestic misunderstanding between my wife and her in-laws.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The rains have never stopped since I planted my small piece of land. I am certain that the harvests will be satisfactory.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In such a rainy season, I sometimes come back home without hitting the daily target motorbike returns. This forces me to spend a little that I get to buy food for my young family thus skipping some days in loan repayment. Another challenge is that, I am not guaranteed to get milk from my mother's household's yet my daughter is only eleven months old and needs to take milk in hourly basis.
