How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, I have a plan to revive the dairy cow project that I used to have. Sadly, I had to let go of the project and sell everything to support my children's education, as I didn't have a reliable income source. However, I am looking forward to restarting the project with the assistance of my son, who has recently found employment. I believe this endeavor will provide a dependable source of income through milk sales, which will support my expenses during my old age.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done a remarkable job by providing us with financial assistance in the form of cash. This approach granted us the autonomy to decide how to utilize the funds. Thanks to these transfers, I have managed to accomplish things that once seemed unattainable. For instance, I now reside in a comfortable house constructed with timber walls. This is a significant improvement from our previous situation of living in a mud house, which not only posed health risks due to dust but also required frequent maintenance through the smearing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been facing difficulties in paying my grandchild's secondary school fees, and the arrears had accumulated to $400. I have been taking care of him since he was a young child, as his mother left him with me when she got married to someone else who isn't his father. Being his grandfather, I took on the responsibility of raising him and ensuring he continued his education. When the second transfer arrived, he was at home due to the unpaid fees. In a decision that felt right, I used $400 of the transfer to clear his fees, settling the entire outstanding amount. This choice was logical because I had no remaining assets to sell; I had already exhausted all my cattle to support my children's education. I am now relieved, knowing he can focus on his studies without the burden of unpaid fees. I utilized the remaining $130 to buy essential food for my family of seven, which includes my spouse, my three children, and my two grandchildren.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It is my helper who came and informed me that indeed we had been sent the money as promised. I became so happy that finally I was going to empower myself and my children with the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now happier than I have ever been before. For a long time I have had a desire of building a better house but I have not had the means to do that. I feel happy that I now am able to build a better house and allow me to enjoy my old age in peace. I will not bother my children who have their own personal needs to meet. I look forward to receiving the second transfer to purchase the remaining building materials and start the construction work
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used almost the entire transfer amounting to $400 to buy timber that will help me put up a better structure. For a long time I have been living in a iron roofed house that was built in the early seventies. I have been thinking about building a better house but paying school fees has preoccupied the better part of my life. I became so happy that immediately after they completed their studies then I also received a transfer from GiveDirectly that will enable me build a better house. My plan is to build a timber walled house that will better my living standards and my family. I stay with three of my daughters and other two sons who still look up to me. I then used the amount that remained to help my daughter Mary who required some money to support her children who recently joined secondary school.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I live in a house that I built in the year 1969 and because of many years of existence, the roof has rusted so much that it will soon leak. I feel like it has stood the test of time and it is time to demolish and build another one. Over the years I have saved a total of $500 from my dairy business and I intend to top up $400 from my transfer so that I can construct a bigger and better house that befits my status.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We had witnessed a prolonged season of no rain but last week we were fortunate to get a heavy downpour. I now have green pasture for the animals and I am happy
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of financial stability is the main challenge that I face at the moment. I am a dairy farmer and just last month I lost 3 cows to East Coast Fever and this has been a setback because they were all producing 30 liters of milk per day. I have lost income since I used to earn $18 per day from the sale of milk. I have not recovered from the shock and I don't know if I will continue with this venture.
