How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to accomplish a lot of things . Top on the list is to complete renovation of my house by March this year . I had already completed renovating the walls using the first transfer but the roof is not yet . This will require a sum of $100 . I intend to borrow this money from our merry go round group then pay in instalments . Since my husband is a skilled mason , I will not spend on labour . I hope God will open a way for all these .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly did everything well , it had good intentions for my village . You can now see the projects , we have built good houses , bought cattle , paid school fees for our children among other things . Just continue helping people where ever you go , God will reward you . I didn't see nor hear anything wrong , that you did hence my wish is that you continue doing good to others too .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm a small scale business lady , where by I sell fish and charcoal . My husband is a mason but on casual basis . We both assist each other to fend for our families . On the other hand I practice cattle keeping but on small scale . I spend $180 on 1 cow and $30 on 1 goat . I opted to invest in cattle since they will multiply in future and be beneficial to my family . I have 5 children and 4 of them are in primary school . They had school fees arrears totalling to $120 which I cleared using part of this transfer. My children have been using the traditional beddings which are as good as sleeping on the floor , I spent $100 on a modern new bed and $60 on a mattress , now my children always look forward to having a good rest every night ! We also needed to stock food because that is a basic need yet it was finished in my house , so I took the remaining $60 and bout 2 bales of maize flour and 25kgs of rice . Thank you so much for blessing my family .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While washing my family's clothes at around 4 pm, I received a message on my phone. Since my helper who is my husband was near, I handed the phone to him to see what kind of a message it was as I continued washing. He stood up and approached me with a smile and I involuntarily smiled back. He informed me that the message was from GiveDirectly and they had sent me the first transfer of KES 55000.00. My heart was filled with happiness for receiving the money because I was desperately in need of money to renovate my house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can attest to towards the transfer is that it enabled me to fix a door to my house which had stayed for two years without. Before fixing the door it was a matter of taking a risk to leave our belongings in the house as we move out to source a living. As of now, we can move out comfortably as a family without any doubts concerning theft.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing I did was to buy a door for my house at KES 10000.00. For the last two years, the house has been without a door. I also bought some hard corals for KES 26000.00 for making some pillars for my house so that it becomes firm since it is made of wooden poles. Thereafter, I paid KES 4800.00 for school fees for two terms for my four primary school children so that they are retained in school without any problems for better learning. For the remaining amount, I bought two goats for KES 6000.00 and used the rest for food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I build my house one year ago but unfortunately, I was not able to finish it due to insufficient funds. It needs repair now because the pillars are weak due to termites infestation and it is also high time I put up a door. Living in a house without a door is very risky because thieves can access my things easily or even wild animals since our village is located in a jungle, the thought of finding a snake in my bed gives me sleepless nights. These challenges have made me and my spouse work extra hard so that we can have good housing. My other wish has always been to take my children through school smoothly without challenges. Receiving these transfers will make my dreams come true. I will start by repairing the house which will cost me 30,000 KES then use 20,000 KES on my children's education and save the remaining balance as we plan on what to do next.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been struggling to make ends meet for as long as I can remember. Our children sometimes sleep on an empty stomach due to lack of money to buy food. I lost hope of ever having a good life but when I heard that GD is coming to our village I was very excited and finally realized that all is not lost.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
With the current economic situation, life has become very expensive. Our effort to make ends meet sometimes is fruitiness because finding casual jobs in the village is not easy. Lack of finances made me resort to having a meal per day to ease the stress of toiling in the scorching sun the whole. My children sometimes cry due to starvation and being that there is nothing I can do to make sure they have three meals is frustrating. Therefore, my current challenge is insufficient finances in the family.
