How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been able to have new goals and even dreams that seemed like just dreams come into fruition thanks to this project. One of my goals was to build a home for my family and me. The one we lived in was too small for us but now we are comfortable. I have also been able to buy clothes and food, these are basic things that have been a struggle to provide by myself but with this money, it has been as easy as breathing air.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I think Give directly does no wrong as they have helped me by enrolling me in this project and changing my life because I would not have grown financially without it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My most recent transfer was spent on my daily needs because I have already been able to build a home for my family and so I could budget for other things. My children who have not had a stable education with being sent home every single no the due to school fees. I was able to spend KES.6000 on three children. I was also able to spend KES.4000 on their clothes ranging from somewhere to uniforms. The rest of the money summing up to KES.43150 was on water and food as we are in a famine and water is scarce leading to buying from traders. I thank Give directly for this opportunity.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was about 10 am when I was in my house preparing breakfast for the family. I heard 2 consecutive message notifications on my phone, I was anxious to know the content of the messages and I abandoned what I was doing to check them. I could not believe what saw, It was the Mpesa message indicating that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and I had to call my spouse to travel back home from Mombasa where he went to look for casual jobs.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now living in a spacious iron roofed house with my family something that has restored the joy in my life. Besides, I am sleeping comfortable using proper modern beddings. Previously, my house was small and old. I had to seek a space to shelter guests in my neighbour's house whenever I received them. I am now confident that I will no longer have to worry wherever I get visitors.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Owning a spacious shelter for my family has always been my desire in my life. This is because my house was small and old. I had to seek a space to shelter guests in my neighbour's house whenever I received visitors something that lowered confidence. After receiving my transfer I spent 35,000 to build a modern two-roomed iron sheets house for my family. Similarly, I bought proper beddings, initially, I was using an old, small mattress which was not enough for me and my kids. Furthermore, I spent 3500 to clear the fees arrears for the children who are in lower primary. In addition, I bought new school uniforms for them this is because they were wearing worn-out ones and I was very ashamed whenever I escorted them to school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a spacious semi-permanent house for my family of 6 members. Currently, we are staying in a small house which looks like a store forcing my 2 children to spend the night in their grandmother's house. This is something that has stressed me because it makes me feel that I am neglecting to fulfill all my basic needs such as shelter. I am planning to spend 60,000 shillings on construction. This will enable us to leave comfortable and makes me a proud parent. Other than that, I will invest the remaining amount to purchase modern beddings because we use the local ones made of reeds and are uncomfortable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of the day. This is because I can perform my house chores comfortably and take my livestock out something that excites me because it makes me busy. Unlike in the evening when I am too tired.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband is the only breadwinner in the house he works as a security guard in town. His wages of 7000 shillings are not enough to sustain all the basic needs such as shelter and food. In a day we approximately spend 400 shillings. Therefore, the lack of a good source of income is my biggest challenge.
