How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different because I have finally achieved my greatest need; A new decent house to live in with my family. In addition, I also have a pair of oxen to use for ploughing. I am expecting to plough my whole acreage during the planting season. By doing this early and timely, I am assured of getting enough harvest to feed my family. Also, my children are comfortably in school studying without any interruptions unlike before when they would be constantly sent home for fees since I could not pay for them on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in its role of eradicating poverty by giving out transfers to the needy households. They have done well in choosing and enrolling those in needy and uplifting their lives, such as building decent houses. I do not see any thing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 48000 of my second transfer to buy building materials in order to construct a new decent house. I did not have a good house, since the one I was sheltering in was in a bad condition and my desire was to at least have a better home. This dream was fulfilled by the coming of GiveDirectly since I managed to buy enough building materials that include iron sheets, timber, nails and building poles to facilitate this. I spent the remaining amount to purchase some foodstuffs, for meeting some other basic needs for my family as well as paying for household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to take my daughter to the hospital, she had gone through an operation and she is now recovering and progressing well. I can't wait to see her happy again. I feel relieved since I had once taken her for the same procedure but I could not afford it. Thanks to GiveDirectly, my daughter is now well.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer I felt very happy. It was late in the night when I had the message alert on my phone. I could not hide my joy when I realized it was a notification message from Give directly informing me they had sent the money. I decided to stay calm in fact I went back to sleep and digest the good news.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer to purchasing two bulls. I want to rest from tilling my farm on my own. I also do not have enough money to hire labor every season because hiring labor is normally expensive. Since I don't have a stable job raising such an amount is not easy. In addition to that, I also paid school fees for my children. One of the then had already been sent home due to fee arrears. Although my other children had not been sent home, they also had huge fee balances. I am glad that I was able to send them back to school courtesy of giving Directly's transfer. I also paid some medical bills for my daughter who is admitted in the hospital. She has gone through an operation to remove growth which had developed. In a few week's time, she will be home, I am glad that she will now not have to answer a lot of question from people who used to wonder all about the growth. I finally started a business of selling sisal to boost my charcoal business. Since the business had gone down because trees are no longer there.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest ambition in life is to see my children attain quality education upto university level. This is because I am confident that they will get good employment in future and be able to live better lives. I plan to use my GD transfers to buy oxen and an ox plough to engage in large scale farming ensuring that they have enough food at home thus helping them concentrate in school. I will also start a hotel business in Bamba town that will ensure I have a steady flow of income to sustain them in school as well as afford other basic needs such as medication and clothing. Having worked as a cook and waitress for two years, I am confident my business will thrive.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Normally, my days are spent in the farm but since it is not yet farming season, I now engage in burning charcoal as a way to earn income for my family. This process is very tiring as it involves uprooting trunks which is quite a hard task. However, I only do this in the morning after my children leave for school. In the afternoon am able to rest and engage in lighter activities such as preparing lunch. This makes it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
18 years ago I had to return home after my husband failed to pay dowry. Ever since, I have had to fend for my family solely by burning charcoal and selling it to middlemen who buy at a very low price. This results in very little income which can not sustain my children's needs of food and education. I also have a daughter who is epileptic and mentally ill but have not been able to access proper medical care for her because I lack the required finances.
