What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I suffered a loss of the entire flock of chicken I was rearing to poultry disease, life has hit me hard. I was deprived of my only source of income, could no longer fend for myself, and constantly starved. Therefore, my priority when I received the transfer was buying two bales of maize flour worth KES 2200 as food. Also, I bought a chicken for KES 300 as I intend to dive back into poultry keeping. Additionally, I had earlier bought a goat worth KES 3000 using the transfers, which I am hoping will multiply to increase my income sources.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 1200 KES on my brother's secondary school fee. He had stayed at home for a week before the transfers. When I received the first transfer I paid for his school fee and am glad he was able to go back to school. When I received the second transfer we were experiencing a serious drought with no reliable source of income making it hard to even raise meals for our family. I must admit that it was a real struggle. I, therefore, bought enough food kinds of stuff for the family. While the third transfer, I spent 2000 KES on a goat for rearing. I do not have any kind of livestock and I would not wish that by the time the transfers will be over I will be left with nothing. Therefore, I bought a goat and am still planning to purchase more so that in the future whenever I am financially strained I can sell some. KES 1000 I spent on food for our family during the Christmas celebrations so that they could also feel good.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At home my father and I are the ones who are relied upon to provide for the family and we both rely on casual and manual jobs to earn a living and sustain the family, so the funds could not have come at a better time in my life because they provided great assistance financially especially since at times when we were not lucky enough to find any work, we would spend the day with no food and still go to bed hungry which was very difficult for the children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
This program has done more good than harm because it has enabled me and even other villagers to be sustainable. I finished my primary education and due to the lack of finances was unable to continue with highschool and this funds will help me to make sure my younger siblings not experience the same fate I did so that they could have a better future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the transfers I went ahead and bought two bags of maize flour which contained a dozen packets each, which cost me KES 2,400 in total and some groceries like cabbage, tomatoes, beans and even sardines amounting to around KES 200 so that it could accompany the meals we would make. I opted to cater for the nutrition of my family because with the ongoing drought in the village, farming was pointless since the crops would just wither and since I had six other siblings to take care of I decided to buy food instead so that we would not starve like we did from time to time. I also managed to buy poultry so I bought two hens each at KES 350 accumulating to KES 700 and I planned on rearing them so that eventually they would be for both domestic and commercial benefits in case we had financial difficulty I could sell some and cater to the issues.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the money quite early in the day and I was genuinely ecstatic upon receiving it because my biggest concern was the fact that my siblings were home after being sent away from school due to lack of tuition money. The fact that I am my family's breadwinner and I earn a living through casual labour makes it hard sometimes to cater for everything in our household, so the transfers lifted a huge at the moment.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most outstanding difference so far after getting the transfer would be the fact that my siblings managed to go back to school rather than staying home and idling which in turn was a very huge relief for me because that means at least they are getting an education.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the transfer which was twelve hundred thousand kenyan shillings, I managed to quickly enroll my four siblings back to school since they had been back home due to school arrears. My siblings are all in primary school so I paid tuition and exam fees which cost one thousand one hundred kenyan shillings and finally they could head back to school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Financial constraints denied me the chance for secondary education. I intend to use the transfers to support my education. I will partake electro-wiring course. Upon completion, can be able to support my parents in raising and educating my siblings since am the firstborn of six.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Am a staunch football player. I like the afternoon hours when can join teammates on the field to play.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was able to pass my primary school national exams but due to my parent's inability, have been loitering in the village for two years now. Whereas most of my age mates have joined high school, I have led a friendless life. Desperation has had a portion of my existence.
