How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to buy big water tanks where I will store water and sell it to my neighbours as well as use it for farming vegetables. This will come in handy to help substitute my husbands income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We welcomed GiveDirectly into the village with great happiness and can attest that our expectations of their delivery did not disappoint. I believe everyone concurs with a great job done in every household with no bias or discrimination. I have no complaints since the monetary support I received met most of the family needs I had planned.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Water has been a major challenge in my village, we have to walk for long distances in search of it and sometimes even spending the whole day. When I received the second transfer I used $400 to buy the needed pipes, materials and paid for the meter. The remaining cash of $100 I used to buy food stuff that would last us for a month plus.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?

I was at home preparing dinner when my daughter came from school and asked me if I had received my cash because she heard her aunt celebrating that Give directly has sent funds. I immediately asked her to get my phone from where I had kept it and instructed her to check for the message. It was at that point that my daughter came back pleased, confirming had received my funds as well. We all celebrated as she helped me make dinner that evening.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is having the water installed in my home. The days of long walks in search of water are over because with tap water installed in my home, will do household chores at ease. I also plan to buy a water tank which will act as a storage and an opportunity to make money by selling water to my neighbors who still walk miles to get water.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Water has been a major problem in my area and most of the time have spent the whole day looking for water. The exercise is quite tiring and an inconvenience because of my small child, who would end up missing meals during the day due to water. My husband works as a cleaner and with his earnings, we could not afford to apply for water to be installed from a nearby town. Once I received the funds, apart from the KES 2500, which I withdrew and bought food, the entire amount was spent to buy water pipes and all the plumbing tools to install water from the primary source. I also paid for the meter applications and am currently awaiting approval, hence my water problems are nearly over.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am living in an area where we have to walk for more than 6 kilometres in order to get drinking water. Sometimes we miss getting even a single 20 litres jerican because we need to que in order to get this previous commodity. I have been thinking of having my own tap within the compound but applying to have water within my compound from the ministry of water plus buying some water pipes for more than 1 kilometer long from the main pipe needs more than KES 45,000. My husband is employed as a casual labourer in a microfinance and what he earns every month cannot sustain the family's needs plus making a little savings to achieve my life ambitions of having a tap water within my compound. Receiving the first transfers will mark the end of water insecurity in my house. I will apply for all the requirements needed plus buying the water pipes so that I have water in my compound. I will use the second transfer to purchase a water tank for KES 47,000. This water tank will be storing more than 40 tonnes of water.I will be selling water to my neighbors at a cost of KES 20 per 20litres jerican. I believe I will relieve my neighbors the distance they walk every day to water source despite that I will also make alot of money from this business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My brother is a motorcycle operator. He brought 10 Jerican of water (20liters each) last wee to my house. This brought joy and happiness to me because it relieved me the burden of going to the tap for 5 days.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house is half build. There is one room which was not completed . Getting the daily meals also is a problem despite that my husband is employed as a casual labourer in a microfinance. I am doing a charcoal burning business but the amount I earn still isn't enough. The water scarcity is the greatest challenge so far in my house. Getting this commodity needs alot of struggle because the distance where we fetch water is long- 6 kilometres and I carry the water jerican by my head. Need to wakeup early so that you beat the que at the tap.
