How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Starting a second-hand clothes business has been my dream for a very long time. Though, this has not been possible due to financial constraints. The support from GiveDirectly came as an enormous relief because I achieved a lot, meaning that I can afford to channel my monthly savings of $35 towards the business. I am optimistic that with dedication and discipline I would achieve this dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The support from GiveDirectly uplifted our living standards by boosting the economic status of the entire locality. It elevated the poverty level because most of us were living in abject poverty. In my opinion, the organization did diligent work because it discriminated none of us against based on our socio-economic status.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a teacher by profession waiting for a government placement, though at the moment I teach in a nearby school on a casual basis. I am married and together we are blessed with one child. Upon receiving my second transfer, I used $420 to buy a healthy dairy cow. This is because I wanted to cut on the high cost of buying milk where I use $5 per month for a cup of milk. Secondly, I started a grocery business for my wife where I used $3500. I knew that this would attract extra income. Thereafter, I bought hens and bought foodstuffs with the remaining amount. Achieving all this within a short period is a dream come true. This was not possible before because of the little income that I earn. I am so contented with the support that uplifted my living standards amazingly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can recall that I was on my way home from my workplace. I can recall that I heard a message ringtone at around 7 pm, On checking my phone, I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and excited that I jumped up and down in celebration. Upon reaching home, I broke the good news to my wife who was equally happy and excited. I knew that I would be able to build a decent house for my family which was my greatest joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am happy to report that my daily life is different now. This is because I was able to construct a decent house for my family unlike before, Where I used to live in a small grass-thatched house. GiveDirectly has empowered my life amazingly in a way that I could not have done in a short period. I am forever indebted to the organization for the good deeds that it has done in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Building a decent house for my family was a major priority that I wanted to fulfil. I used to live in a small grass-thatched house, but I was unable to change my living condition due to financial constraints. This is because I am a trained teacher but I have not been placed by the government hence I depend on a contract job in earning an income. Therefore, I used KES 40,000 in building a decent house for my family. Secondly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes. I am forever grateful for the support that brought so much happiness in our lives whereby it lifted my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My brother and I were orphaned at a young age. My grandmother brought us up until I was of age and became independent. I now take care of my young brother however, we live in a one-roomed house. It has been my ambition to build another house because sleeping with my brother in the same house while I am married is uncomfortable. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 28000 to build a spacious iron-roofed house and my brother will then have a place to sleep comfortably.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had planted sweet potatoes which I sold them. The money I got I cleared hospital bills for my young brother who was involved in a road accident. This brought joy and happiness into my life and my brother is now doing fine and he can now walk with no problem.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. We had started a small business as our source of income vending vegetables, however, with food price inflation the business went down and is on the verge of closing down due to increased debt since most of our customers would purchase on credit and this brought discouragement to us. It has been our wish to have another source of income to assist us in terms of capital but it has been in vain. competitors have taken advantage of our situation and opened up the same business.
