How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal that I did not have before receiving the cash which is to build a rental house in the neighbouring town. I have been thinking about it lately and I believe that it's a very lucrative business since there are a few in town. Therefore once I will acquire the cash needed to support this project, my life will change positively. Being the breadwinner has been quite tough, therefore I am positive that this will be an additional income hence I will no longer strain when meeting my family's basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done well by giving out transfers to improve our living standards. of the poorest individuals in the village. Their plan to give cash transfers was the best decision because we were also allowed to choose what to purchase according to the needs of our household. I have not seen any negative action they have done so far all went well on my side.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $320 of my second transfer to open a retail shop. I bought items such as flour, sugar, oils, beans and vegetables. I have been thinking of taking a loan from a financial institution but I didn't have any security to be granted a loan. I am therefore thankful to GiveDirectly for coming along at the time that I needed their help the most. The business is now doing fine with good returns. I can now settle my household bills without struggling like before. Also bought a goat at $40 which shall now serve as an asset that I can rely on just in case of any financial crisis. I am positive that I will have many of them within a short duration because they reproduce twice a year. Also, I paid school fees and my spouse who is in college pursuing a teaching course. He was about to sit for his exam and because of the arrears, he wouldn't be allowed to take the exams. I am so thankful that through GiveDirectly he was finally able to sit for the tests with his peers. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my three family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While in the kitchen preparing an evening meal, a neighbor came to confirm whether I had received the money message from GiveDirectly after receiving hers. I quickly went for my phone in the house only to find an envelope-like icon on the screen of the phone. I opened the message to see what kind of information was in it. Happily, I walked out to conquer with my neighbor that GiveDirectly had not left me behind in the transfer. I had received the KES 55000.00 as I was told by one of their officers who visited me at my home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before the transfer, I used to borrow some money from the local money lending institutions to pay school fees for my husband. I had several debts. As of now, I am very grateful for receiving the transfer because it completed my happiness of seeing my husband doing his examination comfortably without stress. For a while, I have not bought new clothes because all that I get was for fees but from the transfer, I was able to buy some clothes. All these were possible because of the transfer I received from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is still a student at the university in his final year. We have been struggling as a family to pay his school fees to the extent of selling the animals we had so that he be retained in school for a good concentration in his learning process. When I received the transfer, he had a fee balance of KES 32000.00 after selling a cow for the same. Therefore, I paid the KES 32000.00 fee balance so that he could have a conducive environment to prepare for his final examinations. I also bought a mattress for KES 6500.00 because the one I had was worn-out. I took KES 4000.00 and bought a goat so that I could again start the journey of keeping livestock after selling them for my husband's school fees. Thereafter, I bought some food and some clothes for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My spouse is undertaking a diploma course in education and we are really struggling to get the school fees needed. He is currently at home because he does not have money to register for his exams. He needs 20,000 KES for exam registration and another 19,000 KES to complete his school fees. When I receive this money all this will be sorted. I also plan to buy a new mattress since the current one is worn out which makes me uncomfortable during sleep. This will cost me 5,000 KES.
What is the happiest part of your day?
At the beginning of the year, I started rearing chicken. It is really picking up and I am glad that it has helped me especially in satisfying the daily needs like buying food and water. So far I have soled 15 chicken. Having this extra source of income has made me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a big burden of responsibility because my spouse has gone back to school to upgrade his certificate in education to a diploma certificate. This has left me as the sole bread winner. I depend on allowances from field activities that I do for an organization within my locality. This is barely enough for all the needs, moreso the school fees for my husband. I also have one child who depends on me.
