How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I will be investing. Because there aren't many vegetables in our village, after conducting some study, I decided to open a grocery store. I intend to borrow some cash through a merry-go-round investment where friends pool their resources to reach this goal. An individual may borrow money from this merry-go-round and repay it with interest calculated at 10% of the total borrowed amount.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I believe that GiveDirectly is a great organization because they help those in need financially. Nobody could have predicted how drastically this money has changed people's lives in my neighborhood. Due to the transfers, I now possess livestock. Now things have started to get difficult again, my sole wish is for the money transfers to return.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
By the time I received the first transfer, I had already planned on building a new spacious house because the one I had was very small and on the verge of collapsing. Therefore, I entrusted my son to take charge of purchasing the building materials as well as supervising the construction. Due to that, I cannot give an account of how much I spent on the house but I am happy because he did as per my expectations and I have a nice house. Having settled that, I used the remaining amount in buying food. Hunger was a challenging factor since we have been without rain for the last three farming seasons.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Early in the morning when I woke up, I saw a message box on the screen of my phone. I took my time in bed but when I walked out, I called one of my grandchildren to check for me what the message box contained. Upon checking, he confirmed to me that I had received the GiveDirectly transfer, this made me feel so happy and I ululated inwardly. The ululation was a result of getting a huge amount at once at a time I was not expecting because I had forgotten the time and date we had been told.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before plastering the house, it was on the verge of collapsing because some poles had been destroyed by termites. As of now, I am grateful because the house is back to stability after GiveDirectly enabled me to do the plastering by the transfer they sent. If it were not for GiveDirectly I would not have plastered my house and I think it would have collapsed by now because of the rains.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I opted to make my house more durable because it was a madhouse. I bought 15 bags of cement for KES 9750.00 and 2 trips of building sand for KES 8000.00. The aim of buying these materials was to plaster my house which I did. I am happy that I now have a stable house. Thereafter, I opted to keep the remaining amount for the family upkeep, and in case of anything arising then I will be having some cash to handle it.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do run a small business, selling omena though the yields are not worthy for a living. This has made me rely on the mercies of my daughter who also have a family to look after. Due to financial constraints, the construction of my house stalled after the passing away of my husband. The house lacks window panels making it cold during the night. Receiving this money will pave the way for renovation of my house. With 20 000 KES I will be able to install window shutters and spend 12 000 KES to boost my business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been affected by smoke oozing from the kitchen which is just opposite my bed room. In addition getting firewood has been a challenge. Two months ago, I was glad to receive a gas cylinder from my daughter. This has made my life easy. I enjoy cooking without getting the effects of smoke.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I do not have a reliable source of income. This has made me go without food for several times. I ventured into a small business but the profit realized, approximately 50 KES a day is not able to make my ends meet. The scarcity of cash has made it not possible to finish the construction of my house making it hard to sleep during cold nights due to lack of window shutters.
