In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am genuinely pleased and honored with generosity that I have received from this program this far because initially I can even put in words what I was going through health wide and I doubt anyone can fathom the pain. Through the funds I received I managed to get medical attention. I cannot say I completely feel better and I am completely healed but I am definitely way better off that I was initially. So thank you so much.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before receiving the transfer I had really struggling to make ends meet especially when it came to affording a meal. I could go for days without anything to eat which led me to go to the local shops and get food on loan. After receiving the money the first thing I took care of was my debts because were it not for the help I kept receiving I would have probably starved to death by now and also not to bite the hand that feeds me I paid KES 1,000 to the store owner to finally clear what I owed. The rest of the money which was KES 2,000 I used most of it on food and I bought items like maize flour, beans, milk and even sugar. Upon receiving the second transfer I decided to take care of my health because my back had been hurting for the longest time to a point I could not walk upright anymore. I had initially gone to seek medical advice where I got an X-ray but since I had no extra money the doctor could not study the results and that is why when I got the money I took my results to the hospital so that I could finally get the doctor to examine my results and finally help me relieve the excruciating pain my body was going through. For the doctor to examine my results I paid KES 1,000 and an extra KES 1,000 for the medication they gave me. As for the remaining KES 1,000 I used to it to cater for nourishment and I bought maize flour, sugar, legumes and other day to day items I needed in the house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was waving Makuti outside my house. My phone vibrated and upon checking it I found out that I had received the transfer. I was very happy. Since it was still early in the morning I quickly withdrew the money and bought some breakfast.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The money has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. My kids are back in school continuing with their education. I was also able to the money on buying food for my family. With the current condition, things are getting tough every day. I am grateful for having received the transfer. It helped me a lot.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow. When my husband died I was forced to go back to my birthplace due to some unavoidable circumstances. When I came back everything changed for my family. I started struggling and since then I have not been able to stand in terms of being able to provide for my family. I have been living a life of hand-to-mouth. The farm that I previously depended on is no longer productive due to the drought situation. The major challenges I am currently are being able to pay school fees for my kids and also providing them with food to eat. When I received the transfer I spent a portion of the amount KSH 300 in buying food, KSH 1000 in paying school fees for my children. I also saved the rest of the amount to use in small bits such as buying household items and also water for my use.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I will be able to buy food myself, usually, my children come home with food that lasts me a week till their next visit. Now that I will be receiving money, I can easily purchase food for myself anytime I want to.
The rest I will use as transport and purchase medicine whenever I go for a check-up.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My last-born daughter gave birth to twins this year. She went through an emergency C-section with no complications. It was a joy to see my two boys alive and healthy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I tend to have sharp pains in my back. I had a scan taken and the doctors realized my backbones are separated. It has crippled my movement making it hard to even work. I no longer go to the hospital, I cannot afford the transport to and fro.
