How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a dream to build a new house for my family by February next year. I am planning to buy two iron sheets monthly from my transfers which will allow us to to cut down on building expenses. My husband will buy the rest of the construction of material with his earnings as a house construction worker. I also would want to buy chicken on a monthly basis at $4 each month which I hope to resell to buy goats and in turn sell the goats to buy cows which will allow us to get us an income. The cash transfers have allowed us to dream of a better tomorrow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am so thankful for Givedirectly transfers as it has given me a chance to dream again. My house has is old and rugged. The rain has washed down my mud walls and the effect of the sun and the rain has corroded my tin roofs which now leak. I was so worried about this but I have been able to start using the transfers to ensure that this is sorted out. I have spent $60 to buy 6 sheets of iron. I have also bought food at $38 and also got a chicken at $4.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current focus is on building a new house. Given the poor condition of our current dwelling, particularly the roof, which allows water to leak in, I am determined to construct a new one. To achieve this, I have been purchasing two iron sheets every time I receive the funds. I plan to gather all the necessary building materials, including iron sheets and building poles, before commencing the construction. Once the new house is completed, I intend to start rearing livestock, particularly goats. Since I do not have an active source of income at the moment, I believe that goat rearing will establish a solid financial foundation, especially for the education of our two young children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Every time I receive the cash transfers, I usually allocate $20 to purchase two iron sheets. My primary goal is to build a new house, as the current one is in poor condition, with a damaged roof. Over time, it has become corroded and developed holes, allowing water to seep in during the rainy season. Therefore, I am determined to construct a completely new dwelling. The remaining $14 typically goes towards paying school fees for my child who is in kindergarten. Although my husband is the main provider, he lacks a reliable source of income and often relies on casual jobs, such as house construction and working on house chores. Sometimes, he struggles to make ends meet. Thus, I am grateful for the transfers, as they allow me to contribute towards our child's education, thereby alleviating the burden on his shoulders.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Completing the construction of the new house is my top priority, as it will allow my husband, two children, and me to move in and put an end to the challenges we faced from the rain and property damage. The financial support has been crucial, as I wouldn't have been able to build the new house without it. I am delighted to own a better house than the previous one, and I couldn't have achieved this without the support I received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My thatched house has been deteriorating for some time, with rainwater seeping in through the large openings in the roof, causing damage to both the structure and my belongings. To address this, I opted to construct a new single-room house, this time using iron sheets to cover the roof. I allocated $90 to acquire nine pieces of iron sheets, and the construction is currently in progress, with only four pieces remaining to complete the roof. In addition to purchasing the iron sheets, I spent $14 on food to sustain my family, given my husband's limited earnings from his casual work in construction and farming for others. I am genuinely grateful for the financial support I have received, as it has significantly contributed to enhancing the quality of my life.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As I proudly stand knowing that very soon I will start my house building project and my children will never sleep in a house that leaks; It gives me joy and a feeling of satisfaction that I will own my house and later venture into the world of entrepreneurship. Eager to embark on a path that combines my passion for quality meat and the pursuit of financial stability, I am determined to open a meat-selling business. While currently without a job, I am resourceful and committed to saving from my transfers to fund this exciting venture. I am confident in my ability to establish a thriving business that caters to the needs of meat enthusiasts and brings me closer to my entrepreneurial aspirations.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In an exhilarating adventure fueled by determination and resourcefulness, I embarked on a quest to build my dream house. I have started with buying two metal sheets at $20 to help me in proper planning and have the materials required when the time comes to start building my home. With calculated decisions, I wisely allocated the remaining $14 for food to ensure my family's nourishment. We really thank GiveDirectly for everything because before, life was so unbearable and we could go days without food but now, we are happy that life is not as it used to be.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been living in a one-room house with my two children. This house is quite old as its been here even before I was married. The roof is very worn out that parts of it leak. In turn, whenever there is rain, we are forced to find points in the house where the roof is intact to allow us to sleep through the night. This leakage means that my children sometimes catch the flu because they may get cold if we do not notice the leaks early. I have wanted to biuld a better house but due to the state of our finances I have been unable to meet this need. I hope to build this house through the GD transfers I get this year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I liked the entire process. Having been visited by GD employees who were very kind and open to questioning, being interviewed by these GD officers to even getting to being called to answer questions after being visited was a good thing for me as it showed you cared. I also like that I got these transfers so that I had a chance of deciding what to spend them on. I can now sort my needs as they come because there are no restrictions with these transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the GD transfers has had a big change in our lives. I am a stay at home mom with no income generating activity. I depend on my husband entirely to meet the needs of our home. I was so excited to have a chance to contribute financially. Through GD transfers, I have been able to buy iron sheets which I hope to use to build my house, and also I have bought food for myslef and my two kids. I spent $20 from my March transfer on iron sheets and $10 from my February transfers to achieve the same. In March, I also spent $14 on food and, I also spent $4 February towards the same.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was during the day when I was doing some laundry that I heard my phone ring indicating a message had been received. I decided to clear the work I was doing before I checked the contents of the message. I had been visited and had been told I would receive money but I had not thought it would be that early. So once I finished with doing my laundry I decided to go and check on what the message was about. When I opened the message and saw I had received the GD transfers I was overjoyed and I went immediately to purchase an iron sheet.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The main difference I see from this transfers so far is that now I have started the purchases for the cinstruction project that I had had in mins but had not actuated. As I said earlier I sell meat and as much as the business makes a decent daily earning my hope is to get better so I can afford all needs. However the house was not part of the things I had made a budget for. So on receiving the money I felt it would be good to make my dream of having my own house true. Life was harder but GD transfers have easened life a bit and I am very thankful for this. am seeing a difference in my life. It was harder before but now things are better. I am hopefyul that even greater changes shall be achieved from receiving subsequent GD transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My first purchase from the transfers I had received was buying an iron sheet at about $9. Before GD came I had made plans of constructing a house for myslef. I do not have a house as at now. I needed to purchase 10 sheets of iron sheets and since they are quite expensive I had hoped GD transfers would help facilitate this. I also used the money to purchase some food for the house as at the time their was no food in the house. I am a business woman who sells cooked meat and my mother In-laws palm wine establishment. I make a decent amount of about $20 which helps with family needs as my husband has been out of work. This business supports the basic needs but I cannot use it to save towards the building project and hence the GD transfers will come a big way into helping me with my construction project.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest desire is to start a small food booth where I will be selling food to the general public. I have seen this as an opportunity for me because there are two schools around which will be my sources of customers. To start this kiosk, I am required to accurate my transfers to raise 20000 KES for the start. This will act as my source of income and hence, a better livelihood. On the other hand, I will also save my transfers that will enable me to construct a decent house since the one I am currently using is small and can not fully accommodate us. Thus, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My mother-in-law works as a local wine vendor, a job that earns her 300 KES in a day. Her income has been so helpful to us all as a household because we have had the chance to get at least one meal a day. Although this has not been consistent, I am so grateful that, it has greatly helped us over the last 6 months. Thus, I consider this as what has brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the most challenging thing in my life. Imagine forfeiting food for a whole day because we could not secure any meals for the household. Sometimes it becomes more painful to see my young children crying because of hunger yet I have nothing to provide them. Since my husband is also a casual laborer, his income is very minimal such that, it can not fully cater to our needs something that has pushed us to live a survival life.
