How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Ever since I received the cash transfers, lots of positives have been happening in my life. I am currently a proud owner of a nice spacious iron-roofed house. Back in the days, I used to shelter in a conducive environment whereby my house was very small and its conditions were not pleasing at all. In every winter season, they were the worst moments in my life because I had to seek shelter from friends ad and as a result of shifting some of my properties were always stoles and other damaged. I am now happier and even proud because this new house has even made me gain respect in my community. Also, I am now sleeping comfortably in a very nice bed which is now replacing the traditional one which I could always wake up so tired with lots of pains. This is now history courtesy of GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly did a very perfect job not only for me but also for my entire village. The idea of receiving the cash transfers directly into our mobile phones was the best of all. To add to that we were allowed to according to our heart desires since every household has its own needs. This made us feel loved and valued. Therefore to be sincere I have never seen or heard anything that GiveDirectly did wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, timber, and nails. This was for the completion of my house that I had initially started with the help of first transfers. Also, I cleared school fees for my grandchildren who are in secondary schools. Later on, I bought a dairy cow at KES 35000 which has been my desire to keep in my compound but I could not afford it. Also, I bought a new bed and a mattress to replace the traditional beds made of ropes that we have been using for years. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family since my spouse is jobless and we only depend on our children who also rely on odd jobs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 Am when we were taking breakfast with my family then I heard my phone vibrating. On checking who it could be I realized that I had received the Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt happy and thanked God for using GiveDirectly to relieve us from poverty.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that financial support empowered me to construct a spacious semi-permanent house. I have been longing to build a better house for so many years but I could not affairs it due to my financial status. My previous house was very small and it would collapse anytime because of its condition. Some of my properties had to stay under a tree which was very insecure but I had no alternative. Also, some of my family members could seek shelter at their friend's houses which was far from our homestead. This issue was always stressing me as a parent. However, the coming of GiveDirectly transformed everything because we now stay comfortable as a family and no longer worry bout insecurity issues or even the rains.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building poles, iron sheets, threads, and nails. This was for the construction of a new house since the previous one was in poor condition. on labor to the construction workers who built my house. Later on, I cleared school fees arrears for my children who both in primary and secondary school. I am also planning to buy a dairy cow since I have been dreaming of owning it for so long. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A decent house for my family is what receiving this money means to me. Currently, l am staying in house which leaks during rain seasons. I am planning to spend $ 200 to repair my roof by purchasing new iron sheets. Furthermore, I am planning to spend $350 to purchase 2 indigenous dairy cows. I will be selling milk which will act as my reliable source of income that I will use to educate my children who are in college.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day. This is because I get ample time to rest and share meals with my family members after a long tiresome day of doing my casual jobs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of adequate finances to support my 2 children's education has been my biggest hardship in my life. Currently, I am depending on casual jobs which earns me $ 5 per week. This income is not enough to support my children's education and other basic needs like shelter.
