How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals because the main one I had in mind was accomplished. I had been yearning to own a house since the previous one was very small. Being a single mother of four, the little I could earn only catered for the daily meals. I am now a happy mother after accomplishing my long-time dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by helping us financially. This was the best since we all have different needs in our households. Also, each one of us was issued a phone for easier communication and the transaction of cash transfer. I do not see any part GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying bedding which comprises a new bed at KES 5000 and a mattress at KES 4500. Previously, I used to sleep on the floor which was very tough because I could wake with lots of fatigue every morning. To add to that, I bought two goats at KES 6000. I had been yearning to have them in my compound because they have numerous benefits. Also, their offspring mature very fast which is an assurance that I will have many of them in a short period. In addition to that, I cleared school fees of KES 5000 for my three children, and I am glad they are studying peacefully without any hiccups. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9 Am when I was from the dam together with my friends when my mobile phone started ringing which was an indication of a new message. Since I am illetrate I asked my brother to confirm for me the contents of the two messages that had just popped in. He didn't hesitate and decided to check only to realize that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I had finally received my first transfer as I had been promised during the enrollment period. I was overwhelmed with happiness and finally knew that I will finally own livestock.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the transfer has empowered me to purchase some goats that I am currently keeping in my compound. I couldn't afford to buy any at y cost becasue they were too expensive. I however settled to buying the goats becasue they do survive in my region and I am optimistic that they will multiply and I will readily sell some and pay school fees to my three children. Being a single parent who relies on the burning and selling of charcoal paying the fees for my children has always been a major challenge. Therefoe I believe this is a valuable investment that I believe with time my children will no longer be sent home regularly becasue of the fee arrears issue. In addition, through the goats, I'll be able to cater for my family basic needs and sort any emergency that may arise without having to strain like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer in buying building materials such as building poles 5600, sixteen pieces of iron sheets at KES 14400, timber, nails and the labour charge of KES 5500. This was for the construction of the new house becasue the previous one was very small and it couldn't accommodate all my family members. In addition, I paid school fees KES 3600 for the three who were to sit for the exams in two weeks. They received the money in good time because if it were not for them my children would still be at home. I also bought two goats at KES 6000 as my living assets that I can lean on anytime. With the amount of money that had remained, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means proper and quality education for my four children. Being a single mother, I have been struggling to educate my children. My children have been schooling in a government school in the village but lack enough learning materials due to our poor financial situation. I am planning to use KES 40,000 to cater for their education. This will enable me buy new pairs of uniform, buy learning materials and pay school fees. I will further use KES 50,000 from the transfer to construct a two bedroom house for my family. The two bedrooms will be enough to shelter my family comfortably. I will later furnish the house with chairs and beds plus matresses so that we can lead a comfortable life just like others. Doing this will make me a happy woman and earn me the reputation I have always desired to get from my village men and women.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day. I have been struggling to raise my children. Waking up in the morning alive and healthy makes me happy because to me, that is another opportunity to get out and fend for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of money to cater for my family's basic needs such as education and shelter. I currently shelter myself in a borrowed house. This is very shameful in as far as I am concerned. This has been attributed by the fact they I don't have a reliable source of income to attend to all my needs. My life has been miserable; being a single mother without a partner to help me has made life harder and I only survive.
