How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We have plans that we would like to accomplish. We would wish to cement the floor of the house that we just built. We used the first transfer and part of the second transfer to build another house. We however were not in a position to cement the floor and hence we decided to smear it with mud. We want to cement the floor because when there is too much rain in our area, water usually oozes out of the ground. Apart from cementing the floor, I also have plans to buy more utensils. The utensils that I have are not enough especially when I have guests in my household. I also wish to buy a cow. We usually buy two cups of milk every day at KES 40. This is costly to us and also our child lacks enough milk for consumption. We can only achieve all these steps by step because we do not have much money. We plan to start with cementing the floor and we plan to use the money that my husband makes as a mason. We will thus no longer have to worry about water oozing out of the floor when it rains.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they enabled us to build another house that is roofed with iron sheets. This is something that we never thought that we will be able to achieve. Apart from that, the lives of many people in the community were uplifted because they were able to make many developments with the transfers. Most of them built new houses that are roofed with iron sheets while some bought livestock and many more. We are all happy and hence I would urge GiveDirectly to keep up the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the money that we got on our second transfer on constructing another kitchen. We decided to construct another kitchen because the one that we had was small, old, and it was grass-thatched. We were not in a position to build one before due to a lack of money. I am a small-scale farmer and I usually sell a few crops such as vegetables. My husband is a mason. The money that we make from our income-generating activities is not enough to make such big developments. Most of it usually goes to the purchase of food. We are therefore so much grateful to GiveDirectly because we didn't know that we will ever live in a house that is roofed with iron sheets.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home doing my normal house chores when my neighbor came visiting bearing the good news that she had received money from GiveDirectly that morning, I immediately rushed inside the house to pick my phone only to realize that it had a Mpesa message alert that I had the transfer, I was overwhelmed with joy, we celebrated with my neighbor for the better part of the morning.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life is different now because I have managed to build a decent house for my family, My husband and I don't have a reliable source of income therefore we did not have a choice but to live in a very small house that we could afford then, I am so happy and thankful that I was able to accomplish my dream within a short period, I am grateful that GiveDirectly has lifted my living standard to a better and a higher level in my society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a housewife and a farmer, my husband works as a casual worker at the tea estates. when I received my transfer I used KES 40,000 in building a decent house for my family that I was unable to build due to financial constraints, I am glad that I was able to accomplish my dream of having an iron-roofed house, this is because before I was living in a grass-thatched house, I am relieved because GiveDirectly has allowed me to improve our living standards to a more admirable one.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a youth and currently engaged in subsistence farming to support my family. My husband is a casual labourer and him being our bread winer, his monthly wages of approximately KES6500 is never enough to take care of household needs and invest in other income generating activities. To me receiving this money means a new life in our family since I am planning to spend KES50000 to build a living house and a Kitchen which give us better living conditions which have lacked in our old grass thatched house. I am planning to use KES40000 to buy a dairy cow as an added assert besides giving us milk for daily household consumption and sales to earn an extra income. The remaining KES15000, I will spend it on my family basic needs mainly food and clothing and household items.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning after waking up in good health. This for me is another chance to go for my farming activities thus find food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship in my life is lack of enough resources to support my ambitions. I have had a dream to join a technical institute to aquire skill on tailoring but this has never happened due to lack of financial support.
