How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is different from how it was in that I managed to start a business. I now have enough money to buy food and other basic needs. Generally my health has improved because I have peace of mind. Before then, I used to do garbage collection and a lot of volunteering work. We used to share the little money among many youths. The situation made me skip meals or eat like one meal a day due to lack of enough money. I just thank GiveDirectly for changing my life by sending the unconditional transfers.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to finish my driving and catering course that I had left halfway due to a lack of money. I have been postponing doing exams for each of the two courses because of financial constraints. I am planning to ensure that I finish paying the fee arrear using the transfers no matter what comes my way.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Saving the whole of my third transfer means a lot to me because I have a good plan on how to use it over this Christmas season and next year January. I am planning to pay school fees for my five children so that they won't be sent home too often. January is always a tough month and I don't want to look disorganized by squandering the whole amount during this festive season. Additionally, I plan to spare some for transport to and from upcountry. The remaining amount will be spent to repair and fix windows in my house back home.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is different from how it was in that, I was able to start a business with the first transfer which has really supported my family so much. I sell eggs, smokies, and popcorns on the roadside where I do not fail to get a few coins for upkeep. This is much better than depending on collecting garbage that we could do as a group in order to earn a living. I can only thank GiveDirectly for financial support.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to is expand my rental houses to be four because now they are two in number. People normally rent them for business purposes. I want to maximize the money that I will be getting by renting more of them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer to purchase a television set. I have kids who love watching television. We had one but got broken. I am glad that they can be able to watch their favorite programs after purchasing a new set. Besides buying a television, I also managed to offset a balance for my driving course so as to sit for the final exams next week. I also saved some and did shopping at my house. I finally decided to use the remaining amount to restock my business and repair a machine that got spoilt.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My new goal is to expand my business. I wish to expand it and employ some youths who are not employed in our community. I am planning to sell a variety of good that I don't have at the moment. I know this will attract more customers and widen my target customers too.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life ever since Give Directly came into my life is that I am now focused and ambitious in life. I am now self employed. I managed to open a business using the first transfers which have been life-transforming because I have been able to take care of my needs easily using the profits from the business and the fact that I have not borrowed money from friends or taken loans from mobile service providers makes me a happy person. I am also glad that I no longer idle around like I used to before I started this business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on purchasing an egg trolley and popcorn cage. I had my own search and found out that I would make good profits out of this business considering that I stay near the road. Apart from that, many kids in this area also enjoy eating these snacks. I am planning to sell boiled eggs as well as popcorns. Previously, I used to sell water and collect garbage in the neighborhood in order to earn a living. The income was very little that was not enough to take care of all my basic needs. I am glad that I get money on a daily basis which has really helped me to take care of my needs easily. In addition to that, the money also came in handy in facilitating my transportation cost to a friend's funeral.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I felt very happy the moment I received the transfers. I remember waking up only to find a message on my phone. It was a message from GiveDirectly informing me they had sent the first transfers. I immediately told my friends about this good news. It was a coincidence that they had also been sent theirs too. We celebrated together and shared a few development ideas of how we would better our lives using the transfers. It was such a joyous moment.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My top priority is housing because I will use part of the money to finish building a 3 roomed house in Mathare. I want to have my own house and not pay rent because I will be saving on my rent money for other expenses.
After finishing my house I will use one of the rooms as a shop and either use it as a cyber cafe or rent it out and earn income from it.
Lastly I want to pay school fees for my son because he is going to start school next year. It is my duty as a father to provide quality education for him.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is unemployment because as a casual labourer I have to work two jobs to make a living for myself. My mother and child depend on my income which is very little to survive, so if I am not employed then their daily needs will not be met.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to be a successful businessman in real estate, own various properties and acquire wealth. I want to help my mother acquire land and build her a house then also start a family with my girlfriend and child.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
On my usual day I wake up at 6:00am change into my work clothes then head to work at Mlango Kubwa village in Mathare. I work as a garbage collector in various flats until 9:00am then go back home to take a shower and prepare breakfast. I then go to my groups water point and video shop to supervise my teams work until 8:30pm, I close the video shop then head home, take my supper then retire to bed.
During my free time I coach young boys and girls in football and play football with my peers.
