In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving money to people as a form of aid is Give Directly's most significant accomplishment. Prior to the cash assistance, my household frequently ran out of food due to the low income I generated from the charcoal business. Give Directly came to my rescue with the transfers, and I was able to purchase food. There is nothing wrong with how the organization operates in my opinion.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As the primary breadwinner in my family, I rely on making charcoal from tree stumps and selling it to make a living. This job is physically demanding and pays poorly due to lack of demand. It has been two weeks since I made a KES 500 sale from the business. Despite the fact that I have the product, I have faced challenges finding customers. When things like this happen, I cannot afford food, and my family goes hungry. This is why I used the transfer to buy food worth KES 1,500. We have not skipped a meal in the last month, and I could not be happier. Also, I intended to buy a goat for rearing, but I did not have enough money; I needed KES 3,000 more. So I decided to spend KES 1,000 on two hens, let them multiply, and then sell the produce for a profit. Finally, I saved KES 500 through a self-help group. My intention is to withdraw a lump sum near the end of the year in order to build a new house. The current structure is in poor condition and I am concerned that it will collapse due to the expected heavy rains and strong winds.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received my transfer while I was in the field filling charcoal in sacks and taking them to the market, ready for sale. While working, my phone rang out loudly, attracting my attention. I checked it out and confirmed that I had received my first transfer. As I stood on the ground, I smiled from ear to ear. I stopped my work and rushed back home, where I broke the good news to my relatives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The food I bought made the biggest difference in my life after receiving the transfer. Sleeping, hungry, and going without food were the order of the day before receiving the transfer. I am happy that after buying some food, I no longer sleep hungry and I live a better life than I did before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I struggle so much to put meals on the table. My charcoal business is currently not doing well due to a lack of potential customers. The high food prices have made the situation worse. In a week, I spend a minimum of three days sleeping on an empty stomach. When I received my first transfer, I spent KES 770 on buying food. The main reason for buying food in bulk was to give me ample time to save money that I will use to buy food when my stock runs out. Besides buying the food, I spent KES 400 as savings in a Chama. With my business not doing well, I want to save as much as I can so that I can use the money to start a new business and earn a better income.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is very small and at the same time used as a coop. This has resulted in an infestation of fleas that have forced me to seek shelter from my co-wife's house. I have desired to construct a separate shelter but due to financial instability, this has been impossible. I am planning to spend my transfers to solve this menace and I only need 40000 KES to offset this plan. This means saving my monthly transfers in our Sacco to raise this amount. The other transfers will aid in meeting other basic needs like nice beddings, food, and clothing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since my house had been infested with fleas, I used to spend sleepless nights. This had robbed away my joy because I never knew peace. It was until my co-wife allowed me to shift my beddings into her house where I am currently spending my nights. I am now so happy because I enjoy my sleep and hence, this is generally what has brought happiness to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Imagine at my age of 64 years still actively involved in charcoal burning as my main source of income! The intensity of this job has subjected me to daily body pain and I always feel weak. Since I lack someone to provide for me, I am always forced to do this job. Therefore, the lack of a reliable source of income for me is what I am currently struggling with most.
