How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current primary goal is to open a bookshop. As there are numerous secondary and elementary schools in our neighborhood but no bookstores, I came up with this idea. Children have to go further to get to the amenities. I have high hopes for my stationery business once it gets off the ground because both kids and teachers need these essentials on a daily basis.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly performed exceptionally well in our village and is still doing so in the other villages they are presently recruiting. I'm appreciative of how the transfer impacted my home significantly. When the officers visited us, they were ready to help and always willing to explain and clarify the procedure. I am appreciative of the support and wish to see it in other villages, but I have no complaints.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the second transfer, I decided to build a house for my three boys, who had been sharing our house. I instructed them to head to the forest to look for rafters because I already had the building poles. I then purchased iron sheets and paid the builder to begin the house. The sum of the labor fee and the cost of the construction materials came to $210. My kids are currently quite content with the freedom they enjoy thanks to owning their own house. As I was residing in the same house as the larger lads, I am also relieved that I no longer had to sacrifice my privacy. After that, I spent $310 on a used motorcycle. The motorcycle was purchased to have a source of money to support my essential necessities. My older son transports people and small amounts of stuff on this motorcycle for a fee between various locations

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was at home with my family where I was in the kitchen preparing dinner for them. I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking, I saw a text message on the screen but I could not comprehend what it entailed since I do not know how to read. I asked my husband to check what the message was about, I was so happy and grateful the moment he told me that we had received a sum of KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. This was the most refreshing news after a long day of hard work in the sun. We then embarked on planning how we would best utilise our money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to accomplish my dreams in a short period. It is not yet complete but the fact that I was able to easily purchase the building materials gives me hope. Once I receive my second transfer, I will be able to own rental houses in town that I never thought that I would have accomplished due to financial constraints. I am grateful for the support that lifted our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to sell vegetables fresh vegetables before, but I was forced to take a break after I gave birth. My husband does any available casual jobs to make ends meet. Upon the receipt of our transfer, my husband and I agreed on developing a parcel of land that we had in town. This is because we knew that we will be able to earn good money, thus we used KES 41,000 on purchasing iron sheets. Secondly, we bought two cows with the remaining amount to cut down on the expenses of buying milk. We were unable to accomplish all these before due to financial constraints but I am glad that with the support that I got, I have made a milestone with it.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I wish to invest in housing, I bought a piece of land from my Sacco and was able to pay off the loan. My intention is to build about 3 rentals if the transfer will be able to facilitate this. I am so happy I will be a landlady and I am confident once this project is completed I will be able to educate my five children with ease.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son completed high school this March and I am so proud of him because most of his peers dropped out along the way, he is among the few that persevered to the end. We hope he gets good grades and possibly proceeds to college.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financially were are struggling especially with our childrens education. We are farmers and we make just enough to meet our basic needs. It is sad our children consistently chased out of school for lack of fees.
