How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have three young children who have just started their primary education. We are alive to the fact that very soon we will require extra money to be able to pay their school fees especially once they join secondary school. It is for this reason that I am currently saving as much money as possible to make it possible for us to acquire a motorcycle. The motorcycle shall not only make me as the head of the household to be self employed but shall also earn us extra income to make our living affordable. This is a new goal in which I am very keen to accomplish.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did very well in making sure that everyone in our household was enrolled irrespective of their economic status. No one and absolutely no one at all was left behind discriminately as long as they were full time residents of our village. On the other hand I never saw anything that I thought GiveDirectly could have done better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 17000 of my second transfer to buy a water tank for family use. My wife had had to travel for long distances in search of clean and safe drinking water and this prompted me to make this purchase. I channelled another KES 5000 to improve our shop keeping business where we sell basic household commodities. We saved another KES 30000 in preparation to purchasing a motorcycle. The motorcycle shall not only help me in making some income for my family but shall also make me self employed and I will give an opportunity to my wife to run the shop fully.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out attending to my cows when I received a notification that kept me rereading to confirm its authenticity as I could not believe it until I checked the account balance. My wife wasn't home too as she had moved out to source groceries in the market. I had to calm my nerves till she came back as she had moved out earlier that morning. We both celebrated later, thanked God, and made affirmed the initial plans we had. We are glad to know that our time to boost our businesses was finally ripe.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The joy of having an additional cow on my field gives me great joy and affirms my hopes to produce more milk is the biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer. I expect to see them regenerate and help us in future settlement of bills and even raising more income to initiate other new projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my family of five, we had been working hard with my wife to ensure that we provide all that our children want in time. I had been operating a retail business alongside subsistence and livestock farming while my spouse has been ensuring that all our children are well-fed from the grocery business she has been running alongside our farming practices too. Enrolling with the GiveDirectly's program came as a boost as we knew things will get better once we received the transfer. I spent KES16000 as on obtaining a heifer as we needed an additional cow with potential abilities to produce more milk for our household use, and sell whenever there is any surplus. We also had to inject KES 18500 into our businesses -KES10000 to my retail shop, KES 3500 to the poultry project we had, and KES 5000 to my spouse's greengrocery. I am hopeful that this will help us realize a better and sustainable return from the investment. We also had to spend KES 3000 on equipping our three school-going kids who not only needed school equipments but also new outfits. We decided to reserve the remaining KES16000 as we have a plan to purchase a second-hand motorcycle that will be useful in both our businesses. It will facilitate easy access to the market for my wife and also will be useful in transporting stock from the shop I had been buying from.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to extend my business of selling vegetables and stocking my shop, I will also build a house for my brother who stays with us in our small house.
I am a first born in my home and everyone including my father literally depends from the small amount I get from the shop, my wife does a business of selling vegetables house to house and we consume everything for food.
I plan to use 400 dollars for the construction and 200 dollars for business expansion. I plan to spend the rest to purchase a second hand motorcycle to ease my transportation.
