How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment I am still uncertain about what tomorrow will look like. I have so many plans ahead but I don't think it's the right time to launch them due to financial constraints as a result of school fees responsibilities. All in all, I am humbled and honoured to have received support from GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has uplifted the lives of the less fortunate in our society. Both the young and the old were treated equally. At the moment they were all empowered amazingly. Thus we are forever grateful. In my interaction with the staff, I have witnessed anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying a water tank has been my biggest goal. This is because the stream is far away, at the same time our area is a semi-arid place. Thus upon receiving my transfer I used KES 25,000 in purchasing a water tank. I then used KES 7200 on in buy a sofa sets seats, then finally I used the remaining amount on painting and doing the finishing touches on my house. I am so relieved that I was able to purchase a tank that I had longed to have, though I was incapable due to financial constraints since I depend on casual jobs which are not reliable.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 pm and we had just retired to our beds. Suddenly, my phone rang hence notifying me of a new message. We wondered with my wife what could the message be all about, and we hence decided to check the contents of the SMS to clear our doubts. We were so happy that we lost our sleep when we read the SMS which was saying that we had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. We gave thanks to God because we had never received such a huge sum of money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. We were able to achieve so many things that we never thought we will be able to achieve due to lack of money. With the water tank that we bought, we now have clean water for our consumption. My boy has a nice house to sleep in and hence he no longer has to go other boys' houses to look for somewhere to sleep. We were also able to buy two bags of maize and hence we have to eat for quite a while.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent the transfer money on improving the house that we are living in. We spent KES 25000 on the work and buying furniture for the house. We had built the house but we had not put up the ceiling board and glasses for the windows. We also didn't have any furniture with us in the household. Since we had not placed glasses at the windows, we used to place card boards on them to prevent the cold of the night. We had always wanted to complete the construction but due to financial constraints, we have not been able to. I usually engage in doing any casual job that comes up such as farming, digging holes or digging dams. The money that I get paid from doing the casual jobs most of it usually goes to the purchase of food and payment of school fees for my six children. Apart from improving the house, I also constructed a sleeping house for my son at KES 8000. We also bought a solar and the battery at KES 14500, a 2000-litre tank at KES 15000, and with the remaining amount, we bought food and clothes for the children. With having done all the above, we are glad that we now live in a nice house that is free from cold and with nice seats to sit on. We also have clean water for our consumption and my son now has his own sleeping house. He hence no longer have to go to other boys' houses to look for somewhere to sleep. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for this.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Six months ago I started constructing my house but I'm yet to complete it because I ran out of money. For a long time, I had wished and planned to expand my house since the one we had was too small for my family of eight. I, therefore, plan to use KES 50,000 to complete the house and to purchase house furniture. For the rest of the amount, I will buy a water tank that will help me store clean rainwater.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I started saving money to expand my house two years ago. Six months ago, I started the process and it was the happiest time for me as I watched my long-time dream unfold before me. This is the first time in my life to live in an iron-roofed wooden house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constrain is the biggest challenge. My wife and I are both casual laborers. On a good day, I can make KES 500 which is insufficient as this goes to purchasing food for my family. Having five children all in school is so hard paying school and meeting other school-related needs. Saving means denying ourselves some needs so as to meet others.
