How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The future of my family looks brighter following the receipt of the transfer. Precisely, we shall have enough food for consumption and even sale of any surpluses to earn additional incomes. Our crops shall mature soon. Besides, we are more willing and happy to welcome visitors at home because we have additional furniture of good quality.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by sending the transfer via mobile money. This ensures each target recipient receives the whole amount on time. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly is not doing well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used 150 USD of my second transfer on agriculture by planting some food crops because the money arrived during a planting season. Since I had no other funds for handling such farming tasks, I chose to use the GiveDirectly transfer. Also, we bought some furniture worth 70 USD since we had inadequate ones in our home. Still, we acquired some clothes worth 50 USD to ensure our family members look smart and feel happy as a way of appreciating the financial aid. Further, I paid fees for my child using 15 USD because I had not managed to raise the required amount. Finally, we purchased some food items with the remaining amount. I did so because we had depleted our stock yet our crops were not to matured.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning and I was at home when I received the SMS saying that we had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was so happy to see this and I immediately informed my whole family about it. They were too very happy to hear the good news and we celebrated together.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
With this money from GiveDirectly, there has been a lot of changes in my home. I now have a kitchen where I can comfortably cook, free from the outside cold. I also thus no longer incur the expenses of buying charcoal. Having completed paying the rent for the piece of land that we usually rent, we now can till it. Some onion seedlings that were ready for transplant, we have been able to transplant them to the farm. For the rest of the space that remained on the land, we planted nappier grass. We plan to buy a cow with the next transfer hence we wanted it to have something to eat when we buy it. The onions that we have planted, we plan to sell them when they mature enough and use the money on other important things such as payment of school fees. My children too now have enough clothes and blankets to cover themselves up during the night. The older ones thus no longer have to share with the young ones. With the food that we had bought with part of the transfer, we will now be having something to eat for quite some time and hence there will be no worry concerning what to eat. Thank you GiveDirectly for helping me and my family fulfill our dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me in a lot of ways. There is a land that we usually rent, and we had only managed to pay half of the money that was needed. So when we received the transfer, we decided to clear the remaining balance so that we can be allowed to till it. We had bought some building materials for building the kitchen house but we had lacked money for paying labor. The transfer also helped us in getting money for paying labor. We were also able to buy food and some clothes for us and that of our children. I also bought a few utensils, blankets, and a table. I have always wanted to have a kitchen of my own, I have been using a jiko to cook and at times I set up a three-stone fireplace outside and use it for cooking. I have thus used a lot of money in buying charcoal. Cooking outside too has not been that comfortable, at times there is too much cold. My children too have not been having enough blankets to cover themselves up at night. The few blankets that are there, they no longer want to share because some of my children have grown up and they no longer feel comfortable doing so.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Sitting at home as a housewife is not something I would want to do. I would love to engage myself in meaningful activities that will transform my family economically. I have the intention to venture into dairy farming because I have a strong feeling that I will succeed in it. I love this because dairy products have a ready market and it is a great source of proteins to my young children. Currently, I buy milk for domestic use and it is so expensive. I spend 100 shillings daily to buy just 2 liters of milk and this is hardly enough for my 2 children. To get me out of this, I plan to buy a Friesian cow worth 40000 shillings. From it, I will get more than 6 liters of milk every day. I will reserve 3 liters for my children and sell the rest at the local market.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the morning than at any other time of the day. My husband is a police officer who is in Garrisa County, an area that is prone to terrorist attacks. I call him every morning to check on his wellbeing. Every time he tells me he is okay gives me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In this area, we depend on farming as the main source of livelihood. I live in a small compound and that means I have limited space to do farming. Many times I am forced to lease from neighbors but I find it expensive. It costs 5000 shillings to lease a portion of 1acre for a period of 1year. You also have to incur an extra cost to fence that same piece to prevent animals from destroying the crops. Fencing costs 10000 shillings for 1 acre. Adding all the costs surpasses the overall outcome from this all exercise
