How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With my son currently in school, I am grateful to GiveDirectly for making it easy for me to clear his school fees and left with some amount that boosted my current business. I had been buying and selling groceries alongside maize selling. This is a rolling project that I am hoping to carry on with as it is geared to raising more school fees for the coming terms. I don't have any other new goal but to ensure that I keep track of the productivity of my current businesses.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing an extraordinary job in all villages that are visiting at the moment just as they did in other villages before. No other organization has ever given us such a large sum of money that changed our living standards within a very short time. I have nothing to complain about in the whole process, but grateful that many have benefited through the program.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a single mother with a family of five, I had been working hard to ensure that I provide both for my children and the grandchildren after my son who used to provide for them felt sick. He has been in my house for a year now, and since his children are in school, I have always ensured that they get all that their father would have provided for them if he was well. The second transfer has cushioned me a lot and gave me more confidence in keeping my last-born son in school after paying KES 30000 for his school fees. The remaining amount has kept my business operating. I have added stock that I hope by the end of the semester, will have accumulated enough profit to pay for the following sessions in school for my son.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home busy with the house chores when I heard my phone ringing, upon checking I saw a Mpesa notification showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly, words cannot express how happy I was, I thanked God for the wonderful gift that came my way that morning because I knew that with the cash at hand I would be able to build a house for my family,
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life now is that I managed to enrol my son to pursue a course in a career that suits him, unlike before where he was just idling in the village due to lack of funds to see him through the college education, in addition, I boosted my business and I am hopeful that I will be able to earn an extra income from it, I also bought building material to build a decent house for my family when I get my second, lastly, I was able to stock adequate foodstuffs that would last for a while, this would mean that my children would not go to bed on their empty stomachs. GiveDIrectly allowed us to change our lives for the better .hence we are grateful for that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single struggling to make ends meet, I am a local business woman where I sell maize and vegetables in the village, the house that I am living in currently is small and old, the roof is also leaking, I have been unable to build a new decent house due to financial constraints, I don't make much from my business because it is a small thing and the sole source of income. Therefore when I received my transfer I used KES 10,000 in buying the building materials, I then used KES 10,000 in enrolling my son in a college. not forgetting my business where I used KES 10,000 in boosting the business, lastly, I used the remaining part of the transfer in buying foodstuffs and clothes. ai am so grateful that the transfer brought hope to our lives.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For a long time, I have wished to start a business selling cereals, especially maize within this town. On hearing about Giving directly coming to this village I knew my dream would be a reality. I shall use Sh 50000 as capital for the business and the remaining sh 50000 I shall establish a house for my son who has been ill due to diabetes for a long time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the evening after selling all the stock of vegetables and fruits within my grocery.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Illness for both my son and I has been a great challenge too. we have spent most of our incomes in the hospital due to diabetes and high blood pressure.I suffered high blood pressure due to financial stress
