How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is really different compared to if I had never received the transfer. The peace which was long gone in the village due to the alcoholic neighborhood finally came when people got down to serious work. There was a great enmity amongst my neighbors which is no longer there since we came together in merry-go-rounds for a common goal. Everyone in our household and in the village is currently happy and at ease in every day's work.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDiretcly has been and is the greatest organization that has ever come into our lives. It is amazing how they carried out their operation. It was for the very first time in life hearing of an organization which gives people such a large amount of cash which they are not required d to pay back after sometimes. What amazes me most is the freedom which we were given on how to spend the same money. Everyone was to plan on his own and spent in the best way possible which was the best decision by GiveDirectly. This brought families together since spouses were to sit and plan as a family on the expenditures. It also brought a lot of unity in the village when people decided to start self-help groups and merry-go-round where they contribute the money to every individual in turns until everyone in the cycle gets his chance. Nevertheless, it was my feeling also that GiveDIrectly would have done better if they had supported the youths in the village instead of the household alone. We have many jobless youths and such cash transfers will have helped them a great deal in starting small businesses and also in starting groups which would have seen them making savings and later bigger investments.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Receiving the transfers from GiveDirectly really brought great joy to our household. It gave us a lot of hopes and it was clear that our future was going to be better. We had a lot of plans but we decided to spend our second transfer on buying six goats which cost us aa total of 10000 KES and also two cows. We spend the remaining amount on paying school fees for my children who are currently in secondary school. The money we received has really changed the face of our family and we are now feeling good that we have all we had been desiring to own.
