How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals at the moment. This is because we still have three children in school and hence we cannot think of making other developments since we are still struggling to get money for paying their school fees. We have one in college and two are in secondary school. We are farmers and we usually plant maize that we supply to our children's schools to act as payment of the school fees. We thus plan to continue with the same.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly changed the lives of many for the better in the community. Most people did not have access to clean rainwater but with the transfers, they were able to build new iron-roofed houses and collect water. We are thus so much thankful because we are almost at the same level of living standards as the rich. GiveDirectly staff also taught us well in the meeting that they held with the community. We got to learn more about GiveDirectly and their program. I hence do not see anything that went wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of our recent transfer on buying a cow. We bought it at KES 45000. We had only managed to buy a calf with part of the money that we got in the first transfer because we still had other things to take care of. So, when we got the second transfer, we decided to buy a lactating cow so that we could have milk supply for our consumption and for sale. We plan to supply some of the milk to the schools where our children are studying and by doing so we get to pay for their school fees. We used to have one cow before that we had borrowed from someone. The milk that we used to get was little and it was only enough for our consumption. It has always been our wish to buy our own but we didn't have the money. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly because they enabled us to achieve our dream and our standard of living has thus been uplifted. With the remaining transfer amount, we used it on buying the essential household items such as sugar.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard my neighbors celebrating that they have received money from GiveDirectly. Mine took quite some time, I slept while waiting and around 7 am the next day I called my son to check it for me. Actually there was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and grateful since I have never received such amount of money before. I immediately inform my family members and they were so happy too. I went to withdrew the money the same day and planned on how to spend it with my family. The first priority was to buy a dairy cow to cut the daily cost of buying milk which was so expensive.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs and small scale farming at home. This earns me a small income and I was not able to save so that I can buy the cow. I had other household needs and school fees for my children in various schools. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and decided to invest on buying a dairy cow. Currently I no longer stress up on where to get milk. I have save the money that I would have used to buy milk. My children are able to get enough milk unlike before. I sell the surplus milk at the shopping center to earn an income to pay part of the school fees for my children. I have piece of mind to conduct other activities without being stress up. I wish to improve this breed and in the next few years buy another cow. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 34,000 to purchase a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me because I do not have a continuous source of income. Currently I no longer stress up on where to get the money to buy milk. I paid school fees for my children in various schools. I have peace of mind now because my children are studying well without being sent home like before. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Siongiroi milk cooling plant is making milk very lucrative in this area. This gives me an idea of starting a dairy farm to tap my income for my family. This has just been a dream since I am what we earn from our casual jobs are peanuts, about KES 400 daily. This mainly goes to family basic needs and food leaving us with nothing to buy a cow and venture into this agribusiness. With this money, I will budget KES 50000 as a starter capital and have one dairy cow. School fees arrears of my two children in secondary school has also been eating my brain, I will set aside KES 40000 to settle school fees arrears and buy food and clothing's to my children with the remaining money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been requesting my elder children to pay school fees for their two siblings in secondary school for two years now. This makes me guilty now that I cannot stand for my responsibilities as a parent. With the good news that GiveDirectly is coming to our village, I busted with joy and happiness. The burden to my children of paying school fees is no longer there as I will be in the position to do so as a parent. With the success of my plan of starting a dairy farm, I will now have a good income to put something on the table for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I don't have a stable source of income to support my family. With my large family, the cost of living is high making things difficult or harder now that the little we get from our casual job is not enough for us. This makes us experience perennial food shortages and unable to provide family basic needs.
