How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I do not have a new plan because I still want to make sure that I concentrate more on my children's school fees needs before embarking on other goals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave everyone an equal opportunity for us to uplift our living standards. We were all treated well and with respect. I have not heard of any case of inefficiencies in their line of duties.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband works as security personnel and I am a farmer, together we are blessed with five children. I can vividly recall that I used my transfer on purchasing a parcel of land where I spent KES 30,000. This is because our land was small and it was not enough for farming. Secondly, I paid school fees arrears for my children worth KES 18,000. It gives me joy and satisfaction to have accomplished a lot in a good time. This was not possible before due to school fees responsibilities which were nagging most of the time if not all the time. I am forever grateful for the aid that has as transformed our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At first, I was shocked to see people running around and others celebrating in the neighborhood that morning. I had to make inquiries to know the exact reason behind that excitement and was told to first check my phone, and that is when I realized that the transfer we had been expecting from GiveDirectly was already in our accounts. I thanked God and started making clear plans on spending since I had promised myself to only set clear goals once I have received the transfers. I was alone that morning at home and had to make a call to inform my husband who is currently working some distance away from home about the good news. He was equally excited, mentioned some of the things that he wished we should consider, and gave me that authority of initiating them right after withdrawing the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After accomplishing a lot with the first transfer and hoping to still see other changes in our household, I am thankful to GiveDirectly for this noble course that has seen not only my household transformed but also other households in my neighborhood. The purchase of a water tank will bring the biggest difference in my life, and even though it is yet to be delivered, I already feel relieved that the hardest task of fetching water from the river is soon coming to a stop.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It had been a great challenge for us to manage the construction of a new house that we had already started. We had to move in amidst the construction since we were never sure whether we would get any accumulated money that could see us through that project since the urge to always settle school fees for our four children always came first. On receiving this transfer, I made it a priority to ensure the completion of the remaining parts of the house before allocating the remaining amount to other new and existing projects. With the first KES22000, I obtained and fixed the soft board on the ceiling, fixed the windows, paint all around the fascia board and soffits, and also paid the labor charges. I was also obliged to ensure that all the farms are tilled and planted that cost KES35000 after obtaining seeds and other farm inputs. Since my children are also approaching their examination seasons, I spent KES13000 on settling the ongoing term's fees for all four children. I put aside the remaining amount with the plan to purchase a large water tank that will be collecting rainwater from the roof during rainy seasons. This had been my hope for such a long time since I needed to reduce the struggles of moving to and from the river during dry seasons. At the moment, I am glad since the seller of the plastic tanks promised to deliver one this week that I will only pay on delivery to my doorstep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I primarily depend on livestock keeping to meet my family needs thus I always struggle to see that my farming improves. I am planning to spend KES30000 to buy a dairy cow to add to my herd since this is an added asset and when it calves down I will have more milk for both household consumption and sales to earn more income which will, in turn, help me educate my children. I wish to use another KES30000 to renovate my current house. I live in a semi-permanent house and its walls have started cutting off the making it look old uncomfortable to stay in. After renovating these walls I will be again be assured of my comfy and safe house for my family. In addition, I will use another KES28000 to pay my children's school fees. This will enable them to have a good time to study and I also enjoy humble minds as I look for money to settle next year's fee. I will use the remaining amount on farming to buy some farm inputs and household daily basic needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a farmer I spent much of my day working in my farm and this is always so tiring for me. To me the happiest part of my day is in the evening since this the time I am back home ready to relax as we enjoy and bound with my family over our supper.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We receive low rainfalls in our area thus having good produce to sustain the family throughout the year isn't possible. In the year 2018, we receive we had longer droughts than we had ever received before and this adversely affects our crops living us with no yields. Lack of food during this period was the biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life since we could sometimes go to bed unsatisfied or just empty.
