In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The most important task that Give Directly performs is the transfer of cash to individuals. I benefited from the previous two transfers by purchasing a goat and two chickens. In addition, the money has enabled me to purchase enough food for my family. I cannot think of anything that Give Directly does wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband died a few weeks after being enrolled in the cash program, and life has been difficult since then because he was the primary provider in the family. I started making and selling charcoal but quit because it was physically demanding and caused me a lot of body pain. As a result, my sons took on the responsibility of providing for the household through the same means. However, their income is very low due to the market's low demand for charcoal. As a result, it has been hard to enjoy the luxury of regular meal consumption. So, I spent KES 500 from the transfer on food. I also purchased two hens for KES 1,000, intending to let them multiply and sell them later at a profit. Finally, I set aside KES 1,500 to help pay for my grandchildren's school fees if their studies get suspended due to unpaid balances.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
With no employment, often you would find me home either seated or doing some house chores. on this day, my son, whom I had depended on mostly, had not been contracted that week. As he normally worked as a handyman at a construction site. For days we had been going to bed on an empty stomach. So, when I got to see the message that give directly sent me some money, I was ecstatic. Even in my hunger, all I thought of were ways to be financially independent. The first thing I thought of doing was to purchase a goat to revive my pastoral farming business. I then bought some nourishments with the amount that remained to feed my daughter, her four children, and I as we all live under the same roof.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Ever since the passing of my husband, I have been living a life full of problems. From the house where I lived with my daughter and her four children, it was very much disoriented and it sort of felt like living outside. During the rainy seasons, we would look for shelter from our neighbors. In January, my son made an effort to build a mud house for us. Even though it's yet to be completed, it is way comfortable and safe in all seasons. We also have challenges when it comes to food provision, especially after the droughts that cost me 20 of my goats. now that I'm receiving these funds, I have witnessed some improvements on my end. I started working on reviving my pastoral farming business as I bought a goat and we also have some funds that cover our food expenses. So, there has been a great difference ever since I started receiving this money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow with eight children who unfortunately never got the privilege to go to school due to lack of funds. I used to work as a pastoral farmer but because of the droughts that hit the area I live in, all 20 of my goats perished. This left me totally dependent on my children who do casual jobs. When I got to hear about give directly, I saw a chance of being financially independent again. All I wanted to do was to revive my pastoral farming business. I thereby used the money I got to buy a goat. For the remaining balance, I bought some food as I had also run out of it.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest desire is to see my grandchildren getting the best education for a better future. Currently, they are in primary school and the challenge has been the lack of school fees. I intend to use my monthly transfers to support them in paying their school fees. This will allow them to settle in school and thus, good performances. On the other hand, I will also spend some of my transfers on livestock to have a long-term investment plan for myself. Hence, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the many challenges that I have gone through in my life, one thing that I am grateful for is the good health that I have had over the last 6 months. I consider this as a privilege to me and thus, my source of joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband died 5 days after the first enrollment to this program. This was a big blow to me because he has been a pillar in our household. This means I will be forced to assume his role as the breadwinner, which I consider a challenge because I am not energetic to engage in strenuous work to earn a living. Hence, the worry which comes with the uncertainty of assuming this role is what currently challenges me most.
