How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I now have capital to use in starting my own business. This had always been my dream and I am now glad that I am soon going to actualize it. Starting this business will give me hope that I will be able to cater for my family's daily needs on time and educate my children without much struggles.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving out financial aid to people and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 3000 to buy some clothes for my children. I decided on this as a way of replacing the old ones that were torn. I saved the remaining amount and I am planning to use it to open a small hardware shop. I would have started this business already but I have not found a room to rent yet.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was ten to seven in that morning after cooking breakfast for the male initiates who were under my custody when I heard my phone ring. On checking in it, I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw it was the money I had been eagerly waiting for.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is having capital to start my hardware business. I usually work as a vegetable vendor but I have always desired to start an hardware business for the past three years. In order to realize my dream, I had started rearing young bulls and heifers with a vision of selling them once they have grown in order to get capital for my dream hardware. I am grateful that GD has done wonders because with the first and second transfers I only need to sell one bull as a top up for starting my own hardware. This means job creation for the youth in my community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 4700 of my transfer on food and clothing for my son who just his male circumcision. KES 50,000 I have saved as capital for an hardware business I intend to venture into once I receive the second transfers because there's only one hardware in our place. From the hardware income I intend to use on my kids' school fees and buy an additional piece of land.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my dream of opening a hardware store will materialize. Returns from my grocery business are only sufficient to meet our basic needs. As a single lady and parent, I have been yearning to open a hardware store in our local center because none exists. Hence, I find a great opportunity that will probably attract substantial income for our family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I am resuming my grocery business and engaging with my clients. This serves as a sign of blessings and a promising day because I solely depend on the business for my family's existence and development.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since my childhood to date, my dream job has been teaching. Unfortunately, while I was in form two (secondary school), my single parent(mother) refused to pay my school fees though she could afford it. As a result, I dropped out of school. Accordingly, my dream shattered because no one else came to my rescue. Hence, the biggest hardship I have faced in life is dropping out of school when I dearly needed to pursue my dream course. To date, I feel that I have failed in life.
