How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My next plan would be to start a second-hand clothes business in the village to attract more income. To achieve this dream, I plan on using the Mary-go-round saving from the informal women's group in accomplishing this goal. Where I would be expecting a sum of $360 at the end of the year. I am optimistic that the money would go a long way in realising this dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the support from GiveDirectly has brought financial freedom to our community. People were able to realise their goals easily. Additionally, they took their time in educating us on the common scams and the risk that the money comes with and how to overcome them. The organisational model of working is admirable, thus I do not see things that they need to work on or improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband works in the city, and I am a consistent farmer. We have two children. When we received our initial transfer, we opted to build a decent house for our family because we were relocating from the family house to our place, unfortunately; the money was insufficient to complete the construction. Therefore, when we got our second transfer, our major priority was for us to complete the house. We, therefore, used $400 on the completion. This was not possible before due to the high cost of building materials and also financial constraints. Thereafter, we bought foodstuffs with the remaining amount. The support from the organization came at the right time of need and it enabled me to move swiftly without any financial hiccups, thus I am grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy cleaning my house that day at around 5 pm when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, I confirmed to have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was happy and shocked at the same time and decided to check my MPesa balance just to make sure this was real.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the availability of money for building a better house on our piece of land. I had desired to build in that land for the past two years but couldn't afford it. This is because of my child's school fees and my husband's meager salary.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of one and my husband works as a security guard for the past 16 years. About 8 years ago my husband bought three eight pieces of land because our home share is only an eighth. We have been using it for the farming of maize and beans. So when I received the transfers I saw this as an opportunity to build a house in that land because I had desired but couldn't afford it. Therefore, I spent KES 18,000 on 24 Iron sheets, and KES 24, 000 on 200 pieces of timber. This will help in actualizing my dream of constructing a modern timber-framed house. Secondly, I also spent KES 6000 on food and household items. This will sustain my family for a longer time. Initially, my daily household budget was KES 200 spent on maize meals and milk only. Thirdly, I spent KES 3000 on settlement of school fees areas for my daughter in primary school. Additionally, KES 1000 was used on the purchase of school uniforms. Lastly, I spent KES 3, 000 on the latest clothing fashion which has made my family more decent than before when used to afford only second-handed clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband has seven brothers three of whom live together with us in his father's land that has not been subdivided amongst them. Our constant worry is not getting any piece of land from him and we had to buy 0.3 acres of land to develop when that happens. Receiving this money will enable us to build our house on that land and relocate there together with my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Our area does not normally receive constant rainfall but that has not been so in the last six months. I was able to plant and harvest enough maize that will serve us for the next couple of months hence bringing me joy because I am assured that my family will not lack food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My major challenge is having a small piece of land for farming since we still live in my father-in-law's compound. This has limited me in keeping a dairy cow for milk that will enable me to earn some money whenever I sell milk, rear chicken, and farm vegetables.
