How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When I get my third transfer, I plan to purchase cows so that I can get milk for my family and stop buying milk from the shop, which is very expensive. I believe having my own cows will help reduce costs and improve my family’s nutrition. Additionally, I will combine the income from my business with the transfer to invest in more livestock. This will not only provide a steady source of milk but also give me an opportunity to increase my income through selling the livestock. My goal is to become more self-sufficient and reduce my reliance on external sources. I am hopeful that with hard work and the right investments, I will be able to improve my family’s quality of life in the coming years.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
When the officers came, they treated us with respect and patience, always happy to help and make sure we understood everything. They asked if we were willing to participate in the program, and I felt that they genuinely cared about our well-being. I did not notice anything wrong with the way GiveDirectly handled things, and I appreciated their approach. However, I noticed that some people were left out during the enrollment process, and my wish was for everyone in the community to be included, so that we would all be treated equally. I believe that if everyone who needed help was enrolled, it would make a big difference for the whole community. Overall, I am grateful for the support GiveDirectly has given, but I hope future enrollments can be more inclusive.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am truly grateful for the support I received, and I knew I had to give back to God, so I took $45 as a tithe at church to thank Him for His blessings. Farming has always been my source of livelihood, and with the unconditional cash transfer, I was able to invest $270 in preparing my farm. This included plowing, labor for preparation, tomato seeds, and vegetables. Farming not only helps me meet my family’s needs, but it also helps pay for my children’s school fees. Over the years, I’ve also used the income from farming to buy livestock such as goats and sheep, which I can sell for further investment or to support my business. The floods, however, caused a major setback. They destroyed my beans, goats, sheep, and even the maize in my store, leaving me devastated. Despite this, I didn’t give up, and with the remaining money, I spent $90 on food, ensuring my family had enough to eat. I also spent $40 on stocking my grocery business in town, which has started to grow. Before I had limited stock, making only $10 per day, but now with more stock, I am able to make $24 per day.Though life was hard after the floods, I feel a sense of relief and hope now that I am recovering. Thanks to GiveDirectly’s support, I have been able to rebuild my life and my business. I still have a long way to go, but I am optimistic that with hard work and God's blessings, I will continue to make progress. I am forever grateful for this opportunity.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was working on my kitchen garden when I heard a message on my phone. When I checked, I saw it was $200 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy, I prayed immediately to thank God and ask Him to bless GiveDirectly for the support. I quickly called my husband to tell him the good news, and I informed my children too. We were all filled with joy as a family. The first thing that I thought of was giving 10% to the church.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After losing our crops and livestock to the floods, paying school fees became a major challenge, especially for our daughter, who had just joined high school. Her fees for this term were a huge worry, and I didn’t know where I would even find the money for her arrears from the previous term. Fortunately, GiveDirectly’s support came at the perfect time, and I was able to reduce the arrears from $126 to $26. I also rely on my vegetable business, and the cash helped me restock as it was running low due to overdependence. Now, my business is thriving, with daily earnings increasing from $7 to $20, and I no longer worry about school fees. The knowledge of the next transfer gives me even more hope. Thank you, GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my first transfer from GiveDirectly, the first thing I did was offer 10% to my church, giving $20 as a way of thanking God because I believed He used GiveDirectly to bless and uplift us. My daughter had recently joined high school and owed about $126 in fees, so to prevent the debt from growing further, I decided to use $100 of the transfer to reduce it. My family relies on my grocery business, while my husband does crop farming and livestock keeping, but we lost our crops and animals to floods this year. This left us depending solely on the business, which led to a reduction in stock. With the transfer, I spent $50 to restock my business, and now my daily earnings have increased from $7 to $20. I used the remaining $30 to buy food items we were lacking, such as sugar and maize flour.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have many plans for the cash transfers. I plan to first use the cash transfer to do farming. I intend to use about KES 20000 of the transfers to accomplish this. I also plan to pay school fees for my 3 children who are in various institutions. I plan to use about KES 40000 of the transfers to accomplish this. This is important because my children will remain in school without getting sent home because of unpaid school fees. For the remaining amount I intend to boost my grocery business that I have been running. With an additional KES 40000, my business will thrive since I will have money to purchase more stock. This will be an investment that will give me money to provide and sustain my family. I'm really excited to receive the cash transfers from Give Directly since I know it will surely transform our life's positively.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the past 6 months, my happiness has come from my family's wellbeing. We haven't been sick which delights me greatly and I'm grateful to the almighty God for this.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest challenge currently is a lack of money and the tightening cost of living. This has made my life very difficult because I lack money to pay for my three children's school fees and also purchase food for our family. This has made life difficult since what I get from the small business I have is not enough to cater for all our needs.
