How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different from how it would have been had I not received the transfer because I currently do not buy milk like I used to before. Also, I earn an income through the sale of milk. The transfer also enabled me to expand my business and I currently have more customers unlike before. This is because they know that they can get everything in my shop thus it will save them time of moving from one shop to another.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by uplifting our living standards in various ways. Their officers were also very friendly and did not have any form of discrimination.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I am a business man owning a shop at the nearest shopping centres and I rent a house for this business. As a way of saving the money I usually use on rent, I used a good amount from my second transfer to buy a plot where I am intending to build a shop. Also, I spent some amount to expand my shop by restocking it. Currently, people get various items in my shop including the ones that I did not have before. I spent the remaining amount to buy food and decent clothes for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk from my neighbors and it was so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village and I also run a small retail shop. The amount of money that I get from the two activities was so small and I was not in a position to save to buy a dairy cow. I used all the profits from my shops to meet the basic needs including paying school fees for my children in primary school. Currently, I no longer buy milk because I have enough for the family. I sell the surplus milk at the market to earn an income to meet additional expenses and also pay to save some amount to pay part of the school fees for my children. I am so much happy because I know that in the near future I will have saved enough to add stock to my retail shop and clear all the school fees to enable my children to study without being sent home to collect school fees. GiveDirectly has brought a big change to my life and the people around me.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my money I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I remember it was very early in the morning when I was switching on my phone. Immediately I got two messages from GiveDirectly and from Safaricom confirming that I have received 55000 KES. We felt so happy with my children and spouse. I knew from that point that I was in a position to buy a dairy cow to cut the daily cost of buying milk.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer to buy a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was costly for me and I found this as the only way to cut the cost of buying milk and the rest of the money I used it to buy food for the family and added stock to my retail business shop.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Adding one more dairy cow to my herd is what receiving this money means to me. I also plan to initiate a cereals business for my wife so that she can be able to help me in terms of supporting the needs of our family, which means our living standards will greatly improve
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being an employed motorcycle rider, I spend most of my time on the roads transporting my clients as well as other goods to various destinations. I do this all throughout the day hence coming back home in the evening all tired carrying food for my children depicts success which makes this the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a motorbike rider, the income i earn daily from my work ain't sufficient enough to satisfy the needs of my family. I struggle to ensure my children get some food at the end of the day and some other basic needs including education. For a long time now, my wish has been to set up a savings account that would enable me to start a profitable project in future but i haven't been able to realise this dream which makes this the biggest hardship i face.
