How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Upon receiving my recent transfer, I first worked on my initial goal of buying two cows. I hope that these cows are going to be of great help to me and my family at large. From them we shall be able to obtain milk not only for my domestic use but also for sale. Immediately I accomplished this goal, I developed an additional goal of building a new house. Previously, I was living in a small house which was almost falling down since it is extremely old.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my judgement, GiveDirectly does so well in enrolling people in the program without discrimination. This has positively impacted lives of our people. As a result of the transfer, there is a visible change in the outlook of the village. People are now living well and are able to comfortably support their children's educational needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most transfer to pay school fees for my three children who are currently in secondary school. Their fees arrears had accumulated hence I had to pay a total KES 34,000. I am glad that currently they are studying comfortably without interruption. In the past, they were always being sent back home for fees thus they were a missing a lot, a situation that undermined their performance. I spent the rest of the transfer to buy 7 goats. These are my live assets that will be helpful to my family in the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember just like the other day when I was from the dam with my friends at exactly 10 AM when I saw a message notification. Since I am illiterate, I asked my helper to check what the notification was all about. After checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. On receiving the news I felt so happy and thanked God for the blessings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have two dairy cows in my homestead. Dairy cows normally have numerous benefits and I am optimistic I will achieve most of my goals through them. First, the plenty liters of milk will purely for the business and since there is a high demand for milk in my region, I am certain I will get good returns. Also for the remaining liters, they will be for my family's consumption which will be a surplus to their daily meals making them healthier. In addition to that, I will also be getting manure from the cows which I will apply to my farm and provide essential nutrients to my crops. Therefore I will be saving the money that I have been using to buy fertilizer. It was for my own money, it has taken years for me to accomplish all these.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying two dairy cows worthy of KES 24000. I have been yearning to own them for a couple of years but I could not afford them becasue they were costly. Later on, I bought pieces of iron sheets, timber, and nails for the construction of a new house. The previous one was a small grass-thatched hut that was leaky. To add to that, I bought decent clothes for my children to replace the old rags that they have having. Also, I cleared school fees arrear for my children and bought enough food as well.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My family has never lived in an iron sheet roofed house since we came to existence. The much we can afford are traditional huts made of grass and they are not durable. We have had almost six of them because they keep on collapsing since they cannot withstand heavy rainfall. The current one is equally in bad shape and unfit for human life. Receiving this money therefore means achieving my dream of constructing a better house for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I always feel strong during this time after such a restful night.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Besides subsistence farming, casual jobs are our other source of livelihood. My husband is actively engaged in them but we cannot account for the wages because we spend them as he earns. This makes it difficult to cater for the family forcing us to live in poverty. In this regard, I consider financial instability as our biggest hardship.
