How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In most cases, my children would be sent home due to fees arrears. On such occasions, they would stay at home for as long as a week as I look for ways to get money in order to send them back in school. Late last year, after receiving money from GiveDirectly, I paid all the pending school fee arrears for my five children who are in primary and secondary school. From that day henceforth they have never been sent home because of fee arrears. Thanks to GiveDirectly. Additionally, I decided to acquire a dairy cow which is hope in future when we start milking it. I plan to sell the surplus milk so as to get an extra source of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDircetly fulfilling its promise of giving my community assistance in form of money which is non refundable was very significant and impact full to the general community.I do not find any mistake in it work at all.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the money to purchase a dairy cow. I bought two pieces of mattresses and paid school fees for my five children who are in primary and nursery school respectively. I bought food for my family's consumption. I intend to use the remaining amount to replace the old leaking roofing into a new one.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having cleared school fees for my children has really given me peace of mind. I did not get the opportunity to finish school just because my parents were poor. And because of this, my dream was to see my children get a good education. Illiteracy is costly. I never wished any of my children to experience what I have gone through in life because of being an illiterate person. My dream is now coming true because through the financial support from GiveDirectly, I have been able to clear fees arrears for my children and they are settled in school. Although some of them had dropped out of school due to financial constraints, I am glad that I tried my best to keep the other ones in school but still feel that I had failed my other children as a parent. I am now happy because were it not for GiveDircetly, my children would still be at home.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I still remember very well what transpired that morning. It was around 6 am when I was doing my routine laundry when I heard my phone ringing. I hurriedly went to check who could have sent a message early that morning. Upon reading its content, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy since I knew that most of my dreams were going to be actualized.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, poles, timber, and nails. This was purposefully for building a decent house since the current one had a leaky roof. I never had peace during the summer times and the worst part of it was seeking shelter from my relatives. The hope of having a better house soon after purchasing the building materials melts my heart. I am also planning to buy a dairy cow as a potential asset which will help me whenever I have an emergency. In addition to that, I decided to buy a new mattress because the previous one had been worn out. On many occasions, I could experience discomfort leading to back pains. Being able to have a peaceful night without any discomfort is something that I had missed for a long time and thank GiveDirectly for this gift. I later cleared school fees for my children so that they can study without any disturbances and used the remaining amount of money in buying foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A spacious iron roofed house for my family is generally what receiving this money means to me. Imagine a polygamous family of 13 members, living in a small 2 roomed and leaking house! Our lives has never been decent considering that, I personally spend my nights on the floor, while my children on the bed without a mattress. I usually wake up in the morning with much body pains something that does not give me courage to take my day's work energetically. Our plan with my co wife was to contribute $300 each to aid in house construction and purchasing of beddings. This will assure us of a nice sleep and a promising future to our children since they will get better moments of sleeping and consequently waking up in the morning freshy and motivated to go to school. The remaining amount will help me to buy an oxen and ox plough in order to upscale my farming. This will mean a better living standards for my family, a life that I have wished for long.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually spend my morning and a bigger portion of my afternoon working in my farm. Thereafter, I come back home to prepare the first meal for my family which we share together. In the evening, I feel much happier since I get ample time to rest from my busy day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income for my family has been the biggest hardship in my life. This is because I am a housewife and I majorly depend on my husband who is doing charcoal business at Mombasa, a job which is risky and low paying. As of today, his earnings from this job has never been consistent due to the rainy challenges that make roads impassable. We recently have skipped meals or if it means taking our dinner, we should seek help from our potential neighbour. This has really robbed our joy as a family, something that makes me feel ashamed.
