How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have an additional goal to start up a green grocery business. I rely on subsistence farming but it is not doing well due to unfavorable climatic conditions. Hopefully, if all goes well then I will earn a good income from business which will enable me to comfortably meet my household needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly did well by helping the needy without demanding anything return. In addition, there was no discrimination while selecting those who deserves to receive the money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Unlike cows, goats can comfortably stand the harsh climatic conditions of our area. I , therefore, bought 3 goats for rearing at KES 10000. They are good investment since they give birth twice a year. In the future, whenever in need I will comfortably sell some of them in order to raise money for emergency. My children too owed the school a fee balance of KES 4000. They could not be allowed in school before clearing the fee balance, so I cleared it so that they could be allowed to attend classes. At the time I received the second transfer, I did not have any source of income. At the same, we had experienced a prolonged drought which placed us in a bad financial state. I, therefore, spent KES 30000 on foodstuffs, detergents, and food for my family. I still have KES 10000 which I am planning to use to start up a green grocery business. The income from it will save a lot especially in meeting the needs of the daily household since it will be my main source of income.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in daily life is that l am living a stress-free life after clearing the fees for my kids. Currently, they are focusing on their education without any interruption due to fee issues. In addition, I was able to purchase a cow a future investment for their educational need, I sell the offsprings to cater to any education expenses.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to construct a new roof for my house this is because the one I had earlier was leaking due to the old and rusty iron roof. I obtained 14 iron sheets, timber, and nails for KES 15,000 in total. I also bought a bed and mattress for KES 10,500 before I was sharing a bed with my 4 children that were not enough for both of us. In many instances, I would sleep on the floor to give chance for my kids to use the bed. In addition, I spent KES 15,000 to purchase one cow which is a future investment for my family. I will use it to support their education once they reach high school. Furthermore, I used 4000 to pay school fee arrears since it was long since I paid their school fees. The remaining amount assisted me to purchase food for my family.

What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day. I depend on farming to provide food for my children. Coming home in the evening with food materials from my farm, makes me very happy because I am very sure my children will have something to eat as their dinner.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship came when I lost my husband in 2015. He was the bread winner of the family. After his passing, life became hard on me and my children. Sometimes I do manual works in order to earn something that will enable me buy food for my children. I do believe, life could not be as challenging as it is if my husband could still be alive.
